Happy Friday, everyone! It’s time to continue the look at my favorite songs that have some type of money mentioned in the title. For your dining and dancing pleasure, I present one of the more peculiar duet combinations around for today’s song.
#5: I’ve Got $5 and It’s Saturday Night - George Jones and Gene Pitney
Yes, that George Jones. And yes, that Gene Pitney.
How the heck did this happen? They were on the same record label.
But you know something? It worked. I mean, Pitney wasn’t exactly Led Zeppelin in his music style. And George Jones actually had some (very unsuccessful) rockabilly singles as “Thumper Jones” early in his career. (And if you remember Johnny Preston’s hit “Running Bear,” Jones played guitar on it.)
So they covered a Ted Daffan tune that Faron Young had made a hit in the late 50s. And it worked. Quite well.
I’ve Got $5 and It’s Saturday Night
Written by Ted Daffan
Recorded by George Jones and Gene Pitney
Released as a single, 1965

@LindaOHio — it’s an old song. Now it’d probably be “I’ve got $500 and still can’t go anywhere.”

I didn’t get into his music until much after the 60s, but you’re right. He was a cute one!!!!

@FourWalls It seems, for me and my friends, if he was cute, the music was a secondary consideration!!

A lot of people don’t know that “Running Bear” was written by the Big Bopper!
