I am currently running for city council in my town. It is the first time I have run for office since high school. Have you ran for office? Any tips or experiences you can share?

Hello and welcome to MyLot. I think that being yourself is the best advice I could give. Be honest and know the issues you're likely to face. Look people in the eye and don't make promises you can't keep. Make sure you always remember that your position is to represent the people that elected you. Run a clean campaign and put in the legwork to meet as many people as possible. I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you so much, running a clean campaign is definitely important to me. For the last couple of years I have been the unofficial voice of the people and feel like I need to step up and make it official.

@Meggan Good for you. It's a brave thing to enter into public life. You be you and make the difference. Make your town a better place. It sounds as if you already have support. Develop a platform of key issues you want to address and knock on every door you can. Seek key endorsements from the community. Make everyone proud.

@Vikingswest1 This is well said. Be very sincere and down-to-earth. One of the things I look for in public servants and elected officials are sincerity and honesty, and someone who is working for all the people, not just a select few.

That’s a big responsibility that I don’t think I could handle so I never thought I would. My father was a city council and acted as the mayor. He was supposed to run for mayor in 1992 and it was predicted to be a sure win since he’s well loved by the people. He got murdered in 1991.

@Meggan it was politically motivated and it was because he was running for mayor.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about your father!! I hope it wasn't due to his position. I will see how it is and if I feel it is too much or I can't make a positive change I will just do it for 1 term.

Firstly, welcome to myLot and best of luck in your campaign. I really admire anyone who steps up into these positions. I don't really have any tips other than to be honest and try to do the best you can for your constituents.
