Pay up! That’s right, it’s the end of the countdown that features all those nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars that we spend. The top song here (and in the “money” part of the countdown) are old familiars, so no surprises on either side. And this song reminded me…..
#1: Queen of the Silver Dollar - Doyle Holly
….That I need to do a Shel Silverstein songs countdown!! The problem is it would be all Dr. Hook or Bobby Bare.
(Just kidding, and I do have one planned, in honor of Silverstein being honored on a postage stamp for The Giving Tree.)
Silverstein wrote this doozy (which was originally recorded by Dr. Hook…he was sort of their sole songwriter for four or five albums), and this is the first version I heard. Doyle Holly was one of the Buckaroos, and given Buck Owens’ popularity any one associated with him who wanted to do an album could do one.
This made the country top 30 when it was released. I think (don’t have my Whitburn with me) that the Dave & Sugar version ranked higher on the chart. But that version didn’t have Waylon Jennings. This one does.
So there!
Enjoy one of the songs from my 100 favorites country list. (Except you, Linda, one more listen to Donna Summer.
)
Thanks for reading.

Ahhhhh! There was a show on PBS last night that was all 60s music. It was filmed in 2011 and had all the original artists. Good stuff.

@FourWalls Yeah. They always have good programming during that time. They have a Carpenters documentary on too.

She's the queen of the Silver Dollar
She rules a smokey kingdom
A wineglass is her scepter
and a barstool is her throne.
Yes, I know this song. It's one of the first country songs I learned back in the day.
Back when I was single and in my twenties, a buddy of mine and I decided to check out the local bar where the divorcees hung out. That night, I met a woman who could have been the inspiration for this song. She wasn't interested in a kid like me, but she did let me buy her a drink.
