Insane prices for a new car

I wrote last week about my ex paying $40,000 for a Kia sedan. Granted it is fully loaded and has a bigger engine than my car which is described as a "sports car" but I just couldn't wrap my mind around that price for a Kia. Apparently it was like the only car in the model that he wanted that the dealership had in stock. My sister told me on Saturday that she was getting a new SUV yesterday--a Ford Expedition. It is huge but she already drives a ginormous Chevrolet Avalanche so wasn't going to be much bigger than that. My mother texted me last night about an entirely different matter but told me as we went back and forth that my sister didn't get the truck because the dealership wanted $98,000 for it. FOR AN SUV--NOT A MASERATI! I texted my sister about it this morning and she said they agreed to pay $81,000 for it but apparently after all of the payments they would have paid $98,000+ for it. They declined and walked out. I was shocked that they even planned to pay that much but it was fully loaded and my sister and BIL can afford it. She said that they are now considering the model with the next lower level of features. I'm sure the price will still be nuts. She is in no rush to replace her Avalanche, though, so she can afford to wait until prices become more reasonable.

With this ongoing supply chain issue, high prices for cars will be here to stay for a while. Even used cars are through the roof.

Mine is still new-ish as it is a 2020 and has just over 5000 miles on it

@porwest I love it so I will keep it for a long time especially since the mileage is so low. It is fun and sexy. Some woman older than me complimented me on it a few days ago while I was in the parking lot of Manhattan bagel. Hey I have no kids or other extra obligations. I like the good things in life. I always wanted the James Bond BMW. I think it was the Z-3. By the time my ex agreed to it they were only selling the Z4 which I hated. I'm so shallow. Appearances are everything with cars.

I do not see how people can afford to pay those prices for a new vehicle.

They can. My sister makes $90K a year and my BIL over $150K a year

@NJChicaa Even if I made a lot of money like that; I still would not pay that much for a vehicle.

Demand has been high on newer models. We bought one used, for less then we would've new.

I've never had a used car. I had to buy a new one in 2020 because Mazda no longer leases Miatas and I loved mine and wanted the exact same model.

If it's what people want to buy it's their choice it's their money anyway.
