Luck of the Irish Top Ten: Hard Luck Woman (#8)

Along with the celebration of Shel Silverstein’s postage stamp there’s something else to celebrate: St. Patrick’s Day. To that end, I’m counting down ten favorite songs with “luck” in the title. I’m sure everyone expected this one, and I wouldn’t disappoint. So here it is. #8: Hard Luck Woman - Kiss Back in the days when I thought I wanted to be a DJ (before a DJ set me straight by telling me, “You love music too much to be a DJ. Radio isn’t about music.”) I got to goof off on a small radio station in Madisonville, Kentucky. This song was popular at the time, so I introduced it by saying, “Here’s Rod Stewart, doing his Kiss impersonation.” Ah, but Picky Wedia says that wasn’t too far from true. Allegedly Paul Stanley DID write this for Rod Stewart. However, after “Beth” became a runaway hit, the band realized that people would accept a mellow song or two from them. They kept the song, Peter Criss delivered the lead vocals in a manner that seemed to show Rod what he missed out on. This is one of those songs that the Kiss fans probably don’t like, and the non-Kiss fans DO. Since I’m in the latter category, I like it. A lot. Hard Luck Woman Written by Paul Stanley Recorded by Kiss From Rock and Roll Over, 1976 Too proud to be a queen:

Don't know this one. Enjoy your day. It's a stressful one for me. I have to make a cheesecake and it has way too many steps for my little brain. But it's a very yummy one so worth the angst - just.

I make things as easy as possible: cream cheese, vanilla pudding, and lemon pudding. Instant cheesecake.

Back in the old days when it was more about music, I agree. I studied hard, got my broadcast license, and did all I needed to do to try that path. But the DJ who told me that radio isn’t about music was 100% correct. It’s blatantly obvious now. Back then, it was a subtle secret.

I have not heard this ever but I used to have a T-shirt that said KISS on it and always got me into trouble even though I was referring to this band,

I only like Kiss, because a substitute in my school was the sister of one. She gave me a signed photo of him, but I have no idea what his name is lol. I do like this song

Thank you. The love of music came long before wanting to a DJ. And lasted long after the desire faded.

Just the logical conclusion of glam rock. I heard all that “Kiss stands for ‘Knights In Satan’s Service’” stuff growing up, too....usually perpetuated by the people who told the Proctor & Gamble lie….

Never got into Kiss except for their one blockbuster hit, Rock and Roll All Nite. Lucky for Kiss they kept this song. I do notice the Rod impression on those vocals.

Yeah, I thought they were more gimmick than real music (as opposed to people like Bowie and Elton, who had gimmicks but sure didn’t need ‘em), but there are a couple of their songs I do like. Mainly “Beth” and “Hard Luck Woman.”

@FourWalls Yes, Peter Criss's top ten contribution to Kiss was a terrific ballad. The band showed some versatility on that tune. A song about a complaining girlfriend becomes a hit go figure!
