Another day, another song! Right now I’m celebrating poet, author, illustrator, and songwriter Shel Silverstein, who’ll be honored with a postage stamp for one of those things (author) next month on a postage stamp. I’m just looking at the songwriting aspect. Here’s one that may shock you to discover he wrote.
#6: One’s on the Way - Loretta Lynn
(Linda? DON’T.
)
Can you believe that Loretta didn’t write this? More significantly, can you believe a man DID????
This was keeping in line with Lynn’s look at the “women’s lib” movement of the late 60s and early 70s (“the pill may change the world tomorrow”) from the point of view of a woman who needs liberating: pregnant, dealing with toddler twins, and a husband who thinks nothing of calling out of the blue to tell her he’s going to bring some of his old Army pals by for dinner.
And your trivia: the original DJ pressings of the 45 had the song titled “Here in Topeka,” which is what some people still think the song’s title is, 50 years later!
It’s a funny-but-not-funny song.

Always glad to find one that crosses that line into being enjoyed by people who usually don’t enjoy country music.1 person likes this

@rebelann — I told my snooty music appreciation professor that I liked the opera The Makado and she promptly informed me that wasn’t a “real” opera. So I guess I don’t care for opera.

Hey, Loretta, we love you more than our Irish setter! (By the way, Silverstein wrote “Hey Loretta” too!)

@FourWalls Time will tell.
To be honest, I've never paid much attention to who wrote the songs I like. It seemed like too much to try and remember.

I didn't know he wrote actual songs. Although we have all his books. The Giving Tree was always my favorite.

That’s the book they’re going to honor on the postage stamp next month. It’s being released April 8.

@FourWalls I will have to get some stamps next month! Even if I don't use them.

If you don’t know he wrote it, the biggest shock of the countdown will be at #4. Stay tuned.

Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, they often sang other people's music:) Even Dolly Parton does this!

Patsy never wrote, so she always did other people’s songs. Even the best songwriters will frequently do other people’s songs. Look at all the covers Willie Nelson has done.

@FourWalls Elton John has written a lot of music, that other vocalists use.
