A couple of years ago, I took an ancestry DNA to test to see my heritage. Like many, I grew up hearing stories of Native American ancestors. When I took the test, it was during the years that Native American tribes did not release their markers to ancestry and companies like them. So naturally, there was no native american blood line showing. In the past year, many tribes have released their markers to ancestry. Guess What? There is still no native american blood line. I think our parents and grandparents just like passing down the grand stories of the tribes to which we were linked. Everyone I know tells a story of a native American princess in their past. Turns out that story, for my family, is false. We were also told that our line could be traced back to France and Napolean. There was also strong German ancestry from what we were told. My test revealed my parents knew nothing about their ancestors. The only thing they got right was the British blood line. To say my results were surprising is an understatement. But it is going to be a fun journey learning about my history. photo: my ancestry results

It's a bit like many Australians thinking there are convicts in their past. Some think it's great; others not so much.

It's interesting that your country had its roots in convicts, and our country had its roots in outcasts from other nations. Who would have thought that two of the top nations in the world today got their start from such humble and lowly beginnings.

@JudyEv I think that has to be a big part of it. Both of the early settlers of our respective countries were very lucky in the sense that they could create their new world any way they wanted it to be. Leave behind the old and start all over creating the new.

@moffittjc I guess the new settlers all (or mostly) came with a dream and the ability to work hard.

That's interesting to see where our ancestors coming from. How to get it done though?

It is much harder to build a family tree without taking a DNA test. You have to go to different counties and look up records and fill in the information manually. But when you get the ancestry DNA kit and take that, they use the results to match you up to relative that are from the same bloodline. This makes it much easier.

@gnatsmom That's interesting. So what kind of DNA they wanted to though? Like blood test or something?

I also grew up thinking I had Native American ancestors and, like you, found I was mistaken. On the other hand, I did learn that I am descended from William the Conqueror through his son Henry the First via one of Henry's mistresses.

I did not take the DNA test, but I knew my great grandparents and their parents and grandparents all lived in the North of Italy and never moved from there. I am the only one of my family who left Italy to live abroad.
