I am Reading About Wallis Simpson

Do you know who Wallis Simpson was? If not, she was the divorced American woman that King Edward VIII of Great Britain fell in love with and abdicated the throne for. I had heard a lot about her and couldn't figure out what he saw in her that would make him give up the throne.
I found a book in a second-hand bookstore about her life, written by Andrew Morton. I don't know how reliable a book written by him is, but I found it interesting. According to that book, King Edward didn't really want to be king anyway, so when she came along and he fell in love with her, he was not allowed to marry her and stay on the throne. So he abdicated and married her.
I had heard rumors that she had spent some time in Asia and learned from some Geishas how to treat a man in the bedroom. But apparently, that didn't come into play here. The book makes one believe she treated him pretty badly and by the time I was done readng it, I thought she was a pretty mean person. But he was besotted by her and wouldn't let her go.
When we were away last week, I discovered a book about letters from Wallis to the King and others, in a different used bookstore. I thought maybe I would get a better read on her if I read some actual letters. Her letters seem nice enough to him. But her whole life revolved around having enough money to live a luxurious lifestyle. She was very self-centered and materialistic. Hard for me to relate to someone like that.
Before reading this, had you ever heard of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson?

I prefer Kate Middleton. She oozes a quiet confidence and is independent and a strong confident woman.

Yes, I have heard about Wallis and I agree with your opinion of her. Andrew Morton has written biographies on several members of the Royal family as well as other celebrities. He was commissioned to write one on Prince William and Catherine Middleton so he must be regarded in quite a favourable light.

@JudyEv Oh really? Has that book come out yet? And who commissioned him to write it? If it was the royal family, well then he must be pretty trustworthy.

@Kouponkaren - I have to check, because I remember those were interviews published many years ago in an Italian magazine. It seems they both were not prone to shower and be very clean, I have read disgusting things.

@LadyDuck Oh really? Where can I get my hands on what their maids wrote about them? That sounds pretty juicy. Was that a book or just interviews and articles?

@sol_cee Yes, it was but as some women lie men who don't treat them well, I guess he was one of the men that loved a woman who didn't treat him well.

I had done some reading of the events and found a chant the kids used to sing, 'Hark the Herald Angels sing, Mrs Simpson pinched our King'. There is some intriguing stuff on their time in France as war began and then in the Caribbean, including a possible peripheral involvement in a murder. All murky stuff

@Kouponkaren I forgot to mention that chant was around whilst news about the romance and abdication were still pretty 'secret'. It would seem that the political turmoil wasn't as well hidden as the establishment thought!

@jstory07 I am not sure how mutual the feeling was on her end. I am still trying to figure out if she truly loved him or just loved the lifestyle that his position and money brought her. She never did get to be queen though and it seems she really wanted that.
