Do you think I missed my vocation?

Over the years, Vince and his brothers have done a lot to help each other out when it came to tackling chores around the house. This might be brick-paving or putting up a shed and, on one occasion, lining a garage and cutting a door through into the house proper. These events always involved plenty of food and socialising, particularly once we had stopped for the day. The evening always ended with a singsong round the piano. We had a small amount of brick-paving to do at this house and you might have already seen the before and after photos. My job, whenever there was brick-paving to do, was to cut the bricks to fit down the sides of the path or whatever or to go around drainpipes, etc, and that’s what I ended up doing on this occasion. As the path was so narrow, I wasn't much help at other times although I did keep the supply of bricks up to the men.

You are doing a great job with those bricks. Can you imagine that my husband forbids me to use those machines because he thinks I would hurt myself?

@JudyEv This is not nice, he should lift heavy stuff for you. The doctor told to my husband that he must never lift something heavier than 10 Kg (because of his aortic aneurysm), but he insists that I must not help, he is the man!

Vince sometimes says I shouldn't be lifting this, that or the other but, if he particularly wants something shifted or lifted, then he thinks it's okay even if I say it's too heavy for me!!

@LadyDuck They can be very stubborn sometimes. Ten kg is not very much. Your husband must find it frustrating at times.

I'm not sure I'm that keen now but I enjoyed it for the short time I was needed.

Good job and I know that saved on hiring it out to be done! It's nice to learn new skills and do some jobs yourself!

It is very satisfying and sometimes not that hard if you research it a bit. One brother is an engineer and they are all cluey, DIY-ers. We saved each other a lot of money over the years.

@JudyEv Right! My hubby is always watching videos on DIY stuff. It's great that all the brothers help each other out!

I don’t know if you could call it “missing your vocation” or “the price of hiring someone to do it is too high so I learned to do it.” The patio looked great in the other photos!!

Finance (or lack thereof) has resulted in us learning a great many 'tricks of the trades'.

This is usually my job when we're paving. It's not as back-breaking as screeding and preparing the surface.

Your work is also very important. Probably I could do the cooking job as help only

And that's fine too. It's just that I really enjoy the outdoor work and helping. I do think I'm a bit helpful too and we save a bit of time if I cut.

You had a noisy but percise job to do. Brick work is such heavy work, it is exhausting, we did a small project at our place about 10 years ago and I was never so happy to see it completed.

Your before/after photos showed what a good job you did. It looks nice. I wouldn't be so eager to use a wet saw all day. The novelty wears off quickly lol.

@JudyEv I worked for four weeks one hot summer chopping bricks and block. That was enough for me. I'll still cut brick but not all day, every day lol.

In the past, I've spent a good few hours on it and ended up with wet gloves and a wet shirt. But it was nice to do it again for a short time.

That is real work that you can look back upon with satisfaction. Great that you are a Jack(Jill) of all trades - a handy person who can be counted upon.

I really enjoy that sort of work but mostly I am the 'gopher' - go for this and go for that.

Thanks and you're right. They would hand me a brick with a pencil mark where I was to cut then, while I was cutting it they could be marking the next one.

If I was doing that, I'd be counting my fingers after each cut!

It probably looks worse than it is but your fingers don't really get too close. Not unless you get careless anyway.

Sometimes the question of vocation is not whether you CAN do something but whether you want to do it for extended periods of time.
