My daughter's pet

My daughter loves to have pets. But unfortunately I don't have that hobby so I can't help her take care of it. However, I still try to satisfy her preferences. And here's her new pet, a hermit crab :) She saw it for sale in front of the school. And want me to buy it. I agree because it looks interesting and easy to take care of :))

Oh wow, I have an aquarium with plants and fish in it. I love this hobby that I really take time every weekend to tend and clean it. Your Hermit Crab is quite unique, is it freshwater or saltwater? I know most hermit crabs are from the sea and I do not know if there are those that are living in freshwater?

@tkonlinevn Oh no, that is sad that it escapes from his cage. I sincerely hope that it survives the outside world if ever you do not find them anymore,

They're freshwater hermit crab. Sadly we forgot to close the cage lid last night, they crawled out. And right now, I still haven't found them :)

Oh! That's interesting. I don't know much about hermit crabs as pets. It's not common here. I hope it's safe one and easier to take care of.

Yes. It is very safe and easy to care for. Moreover, they require small space, suitable for city houses.

@arunima25 They need clean sand and water, of course. We put 2 dishes of water in the tank, one with salt water and one with fresh water. The tank also added leaves and moss to increase humidity.

@tkonlinevn That's a big advantage. Space is a big constraint in city life. What about their cleaning? And don't they need water to survive?

Yes. They need water to soak their shells. So we put 2 dishes of water in the tank, one with salt water and one with fresh water. The tank also added leaves and moss to increase humidity.

I learned a lot about hermit crabs a few years back because I had to care for 6 of them that were left at our local animal rescue. They had no place for them and asked me to take them until we could find a good place for them. So I did. I discovered that they can live in their natural habitat for maybe 25-30 years, but most all that are taken as pets don't live even a year. I was told by the rescue vet to be sure they had access to a bowl of regular water and a bowl of salt water, both in their living space, at all times. They like fish pellets or fish, a few vegetables like a green bean or two, or a little chunk of raw brocolli. They like little bits of fresh fruit sometimes. They need fresh sand often. Hey, you didn't ask me all this, I'm sorry. I just remember trying to save the ones I was trying to help, I lost two of them in spite of doing all the vet said. The remaining 4 ended up in a huge aquarium in an assisted living facility for all the residents to enjoy. That was 4 years ago, and they are still alive. They are so well taken care of, I am so glad we found that place for the little crab family. They have had to have new shells often because they grew. Oh, don't paint their shells or put nail polish on the shells, it kills the crab. They are so fun to watch. I put a little hard red ball in their aquarium, they loved to push it around and play with it all the time. Good luck with your crab!

Oh, thank you so much for taking the time to write me such a long tutorial. It's useful. My daughter and I learned a little bit about how to take care of them. But your experience is precious. Thank you.
