The red poppy was among the first flowers to bloom in the World War I battlefields of France and Belgium. It is now an integral part of Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand. Red poppies are seen everywhere in the weeks leading up to Anzac Day. People wear red poppies in their buttonholes and wreaths often feature these flowers.
In 19th century literature, poppies symbolised sleep or a state of oblivion. The imagery extended, in the folklore of soldiers, to the vivid red symbolising the blood of their comrades who had fallen. There is a very moving poem written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae called In Flanders Fields which mentions the poppies.
The wreath at our lifestyle village flagpole were made of crocheted red poppies. Vince took a photo of them for me as I didn’t have my camera with me.

Seems like you really are serious about remembering the bravery and heroism of your fallen soldiers. I deeply have high respect for them, especially those that fought for our freedom. I think they all deserve to be remembered since they have sacrificed a lot for their country.

For many, red poppies signify war and fallen soldiers.

Yes, must honor Veterans, living and gone. We've Veterans Day in November 11, here in America. The Veterans give poppies, at store front for donations. From President, to Governor & Mayor goes to military memorial graves to lay wreaths, boy scouts put tiny flags on military graves too.

Poppies, regardless of the material from which they are made, symbolize the same for us here in Canada.
Our daughter-in-law works for the Veteran's Affairs Office of the Government of Canada, and was choose to lay a wreath at the ceremony on Remembrance Day last year along with some of the local dignitaries.
She chose a crystal poppy to wear.
She has had special swaddles with red poppies on them made up for the twins as they will be with her and their Daddy next year at the ceremony.
I am thankful that the twins will know the importance of the poppy at a young age.
