An interesting afternoon

As I was cycling around on a few errands this afternoon I spotted three interesting things. The first was a bird, which came swooping along behind me as I cycled along a residential street, zooming over the ground at a height of only a couple of feet. It streaked past my pedal, zipped ahead, and whizzed around a T-junction, before swooping up onto a roof to have a look around. Of course it didn’t stay there long enough for me to get a photo, and all I could really see of it was an impression of a greyish back and longish, slightly pointed wings. I think it was probably a sparrowhawk. The second thing was a train, which came over a bridge which many people are under the impression is disused because it looks rather old and has some small trees growing on it, but now I can prove it is in use! The third was a group of graffiti artists in action. I’ve written a few times before about the rather striking and skilled graffiti art we have started to see around here, and have speculated about who creates it and when they do it. I thought they must sneak in during some quiet time and get it all done really fast. But no - turns out they do it in a leisurely manner in the middle of the afternoon! There were five or six people working on this bridge, armed with spray paint and ladders! The result seems to be a protest about the regional water company enjoying profits while discharging untreated sewage into the local river. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

Most of your last-mentioned group prefer to be called 'street artists' now but there is no doubt that they are very talented.

Indeed they are talented and I would like to know more about them! I would have stopped to talk but they were on the other side of the river!

@JudyEv Nice one! And no I'm not blonde. i did try dying my hair once but I couldn't get used to it at all! Funny how, when we say 'blonde' one automatically thinks of a woman

@Fleura Which reminds me of the joke about a person shouting across to someone on the other side of a river 'How do I get to the other side?' and the reply came - I think it was from a blonde (I hope you're not blonde) - 'you ARE on the other side'.

How sad that people who contaminate rivers aren't caught and put in jail or made to drink the water they've contaminated.

It's all down to regulations. Discharge of untreated sewage is allowed in exceptional circumstances, such as when the facilities are overwhelmed by flash flooding. Unfortunately more extreme weather events, and more and more houses being built without upgrading the infrastructure, means that instead of this being something that happens once or twice a year it is now happening several times a month.

Yes that trip turned out to be particularly interesting. And there are obviously some talented artists around here.
