Today was the day to think about money. I scheduled my payments (a credit card and the crawl space work) and deducted all my automatic payments (gas & electric, water, car) to get May’s checkbook in order. The Kentucky Derby Festival is ramping up. The balloon glimmer is Thursday; the glow is Friday; and the race is Saturday. The mini-marathon/full marathon is also Saturday, as is the opening of Churchill Downs for the spring meet. They’ve moved the Pegasus Parade to Sunday….I guess because they’ve made next Thursday (the parade has always been on the day before the Oaks as long as I can remember) into that “Thurby” thing for locals (whereas the Kentucky Oaks used to be “Louisville’s day at the Downs”). I don’t know what they’ll do if “Thurby” starts getting overrun with out-of-towners. Right now I’m watching the sunset, or what’s left of it, from the live camera in the lighthouse in Biloxi, Mississippi. There’s a retirement home for sailors not too far from this live camera site. Too expensive; plus, you have all those hurricanes. I’ll stay here with my tornadoes, thank you. My friends’ son is having his confirmation tomorrow night, and I’ll be going to that instead of playing Putt Putt. I have a doctor’s appointment on Friday, then I’m off (well, I’m always off ) for a get-the-heck-out-of-town-during-Derby excursion. Where am I going? Heck if I know, but y’all will be the second to know! I hope everyone has a great evening, whatever you’re doing. The photo shows I’ve always been a traveler. That’s me, in my dad’s arms, with my mom, brother, aunt, and uncle at Mammoth Cave in 1964.

No, I don’t think I’ll go to Key West (e.g., “somewhere neat”) because I have to be home for a doctor’s appointment in mid-May. Glad you like the photo. It was one of those “tourist” photos Mammoth Cave took of the entire tour group before we went in the cave.

Sounds like a perfect plan to get out of town while the Derby is running this weekend. I'm sure you'll find a great place to escape to What a great picture!

That is pretty cool. It’s one of those “the place takes a picture then sells it to you” things, proving that they existed even in 1964. As the Replacements sang, anywhere’s better than here when it comes to the Derby. I’m sure the people in Indianapolis feel the same way about the Indy 500, especially those who live in the vicinity of the racetrack.

A nearby town has a blues festival and half the inhabitants leave town for that weekend too.

I don’t know if you’ve heard about this tiny town in South Dakota that has a major motorcycle festival every year, Sturgis. I’ll bet all the residents leave there before it begins, too!

@FourWalls No, I haven't heard of Sturgis. A major motorcycle festival would probably be even more noisy that a blues festival.

That is a wonderful treasure of a picture. I don't blame you for wanting to escape your area for the Kentucky Derby. I have never watched any horse races, though there were horse race tracks all around where we lived in Philadelphia. Looking forward to reading/seeing about your next adventure.

It gets crazy around here. Plus, I live in the same part of town where the track is, so that compounds the insanity. I’m sure there’s a waterfall I can look at instead.
