Because Australia has just commemorated Anzac Day, there has been a lot about World War I and II on our radio and TV stations. One comment about Frederick Septimus Kelly prompted me to google him and this is what I found. Born in Sydney in 1881, he was the seventh child of an Irish-born woolbroker. After an early education at Sydney Grammar School, the family went to England where Kelly continued his education at Eton College. He studied music there and also became a champion sculler, winning gold for Great Britain in the London Olympic Games in 1908 as part of an eights crew. He performed as a pianist on several occasions and began to compose. Following the outbreak of World War I, he saw action at Gallipoli and was wounded twice. He wrote several musical scores there in his tent. He was a close friend of Rupert Brooke, the poet, and helped bury him on Skyros after his death. In the last days of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, Kelly was killed when rushing a German machine gun post. He is buried in Martinsart’s British Cemetery. His final composition was the Somme Lament, created just two weeks before he died. This information is from Wikipedia, and the article also says that a dozen composers were killed at the Somme. War is such a dreadful waste of lives. We are seeing it all again in the battle over Ukraine. Drawing by John Singer Sargent. Attribution not legally required

Sad that he lost his life at the Battle of Somme, as many also did. War is a waste of lives, money, resources, but humans never seem to learn. Russia was one of the allies during WWI, now it seems they will be the enemy IF (I hope not) another global war starts.

@JudyEv The fact we all know that he could really launch a nuclear weapon, where? This is what we do not know.

@LadyDuck So true - and now China has signed an agreement with the Solomon Islands which is getting awfully close to Australia.

No-one is brave enough to call Putin's bluff in case he launches his nuclear weapons.

Yeah, its pretty pointless and plus Ukraine chose how they wanted to live. Russia had no right and to make false claims like they the new nazi party. Um homie is Jewish, the president of Ukraine. How in 10 parallel earths would homie be for Nazi's? Anyway, cool story about your guy, I did not know that and there is always someone that changed a countries history. Many countries so established now but you always normally see it when a country first starts off. Where a country says it does not need to be that way and its always so neat to see.

It seems incredible that we're having such a conflict in this day and age. Very sad indeed.

@JudyEv What makes it more sad is we supposed to evolving not devolving. I have not seen anything in the world since the internet started that we are evolving.

You might indeed. It was just a chance remark on a radio station that made me look him up.
