What do you know? I went out. I came home! Now I’m watching traffic on the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine (the drawbridge was up) and ready to spring another song on you from 1962. Happy 60th birthday to this song. Devil Woman - Marty Robbins Marty Robbins had a pretty good career as a crossover artist. This song was a pop top 20 hit, one of the numerous pop hits the country legend had. I had never seen the video linked below. I have some comments. First, there’s nothing wrong with your computer, he’s really wearing a chartreuse shirt. Secondly, Robbins’ syndicated show was one that never aired around here, so I never got to see it. And thirdly, DANG what a voice that man had!!!! Robbins, believe it or not, had another career in the late 60s: stock car racer. No kidding, he was a NASCAR driver. He would normally have the last segment on the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night so he could get from the track at the Highland Rim track north of Nashville. (And when he did have that last segment, he usually ran long, leading a late start to the Midnight Jamboree. It was a funny feud between Robbins and Ernest Tubb about starting the Midnight Jamboree on time, and anytime ET would say something about it Marty would make a point to run longer the next week. ) One of the most remarkable voices from country music’s heyday, presented for your dining and dancing pleasure. Yes. I have three different songs named “Devil Woman” on my iPod: one by Buddy Knox, one by Cliff Richard, and this one. They’re all different songs, of course.

Marty Robbins had such a great voice and could sing in any genre he chose. Every year, when I teach my class about ballads, I play several of his gunfighter ballads and, of course, The Ballad of the Alamo. I've created some new Marty Robbins fans among the 13 and under set at my school. Imagine hearing two sixth graders singing Big Iron while walking down the hall.

This sounds vaguely familiar but not by Marty Robbins.

@Kandae11 — yes, that’s the Elvis song. As I mentioned to JJ, there are two other hits named “Devil Woman”: one by Buddy Knox (a rockabilly number in the late 50s), and one by Cliff Richard in 1976.

My dad had a DVD of a movie he made about stock car racing, and he had a song about it called “20th Century Drifter.”
