Being different

How many of you aren’t afraid of living a life others don’t understand? When I was a teenager, I worried too much that I wasn’t following the same trends as everyone else and wearing the same kind of shoes etc. Now that I am older, I love being different. If all us act the same, how would we be able to be ourselves? What makes us unique? Sometimes your ideas can sound crazy to others because we don’t all have the same vision. Life is short.

I don't know, I guess I've never really fit in with any one crowd. I'm 31 now going on 32 and I'm okay with not fitting in. It took me a long time to be okay with it but I am now and at least that way I don't have to pretend. It's tiring to pretend.

We reach that stage in life where we just accept things. Took me a while to accept it as well.

@Ladanger Pretty much. It's so tiring trying to pretend or force yourself to be something.

I have never subscribed to the thought of mass conformity. I guess I have always followed my own path, even when it conflicted with popular opinion or the latest fads/trends or flavor of the month.

I love people that aren’t afraid of being different from the rest. I wish I would have thought this way sooner but I finally stopped worrying about what others think.

@Ladanger I realized a while ago that there is only one of me in the world, so why should I act like somebody else? I should act like me instead. I'm glad you came to that realization as well. Just be you. Don't worry about what others think.

Peer pressure hits hard when you're young, I always had a hard time liking what was fashionable. Then you become an adult and focus on things that are more important, and standing out from the crowd can be a good asset. However, while I was likely to be different, I never felt that way. I thought all people were unique.

@Ladanger Yes, many people want to be accepted and think wearing the same stuff is enough, forgetting virtues and values matter too.

I remember growing up everyone in school would wear the same style and would make others feel bad if they didn’t dress the same. Now that I am an adult I enjoy being different on purpose. I never could relate to most people. Many want to be the same way. I don’t like following the crowd.

I tried to fit in but was not at all successful , I was basically an outcast at school, people were too embarressed to be friends with me even friends that I moved to secondary school with...I called one friend by his first name on the first day and that was the worse thing anyone could do

It’s best to have 1 or 2 real friends than being accepted by everyone. I know that as we get older we realize this. I can totally relate on feeling like an outcast

@Ladanger I used to spend ages looking in mirrors trying to see what other people saw - they all thought I looked like a girl , I could never see it

I live a different life. I leave the job that I really find hard. I have not started my own family like others. I don't use Facebook for a long time. I don't follow the trend and the normal

We are all misfits in our own way, and I guess it is alright to just be "different" from others or stray away from the idea of being "normal". To be honest, normal is just boring and I'd rather surround myself with eccentric but warm people rather than the normal and boring ones. So, don't worry..you're all good there.

I'm a Christian and a lot of people don't understand that. I've been going to the same church now since I was 2. Well, for the first couple of years I was left with a baby sitter, but you know what I mean.

I think we are all made differently. We need to stress to our children that it is perfectly fine to march to your own drummer, and not follow the crowd. Some people seem to have no mind of their own, they just follow blindly and may as well be led around by a nose ring. Agree, if we were all the same, how boring would that be? Life, as you say, is very short. Follow your heart and go your own way.

I think it’s because most want to feel accepted and are too afraid of being themselves. We should definitely encourage them.
