I’m making two discussions of this so Vince’s photos will display better. If I make a collage of them, they get too distorted.
Back in 2010, we visited the Sistine Chapel. Our strongest memory is of the officials shouting ‘Silencio, silencio’ above the noise of the crowd. Their other cry of ‘no photo, no photo’ was totally ignored as cameras flashed left, right and centre.
This morning we went to view ‘Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition’. This is a series of life-size photographs of the 34 frescoes of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Some of the canvases hung from the ceiling while others were ranged around the walls.
Before going into the ‘gallery’, we watched a 20-minute film and learn a lot about the difficulties that Michelangelo faced in his mammoth task. Michelangelo considered himself a sculptor first and foremost and was more or less coerced into painting the ceiling.
The photo by Vince shows the creation of Adam.

I don't think they really 'distort' although it shrinks them so not as much detail is seen, so making two is probably best.

I don't really understand why people feel the urge to make photos themselves when they're in Rome. They rarely come out perfecly because you can't move around freely in the Sistine Chapel because of the many visitors. In such a case it's advisable to buy photos made by professionals. They're sold everywhere in Rome.

Yes I remember the crowds in the Sistine chapel too. I confess I was somewhat underwhelmed by the experience. I was also amused/disappointed that most of the visitors simply rushed past many other masterpieces on the way, because of course the Sistine chapel is the famous 'must-see' item whereas other artists are not well-known.

I was a bit the same. Even today, half the people didn't bother to watch the film - and it was only 20 minutes. It gave a lot of information about the technique of fresco painting. Not enough to be boring but it's nice to know a bit about how it's done.

What a fascinating exhibit!! Your discussion is about as close as I’ll get to the original, I guess.
