To continue (Subject suggested by @JudyEv I decided to continue through high school since there were a lot of interesting things that happened. Actually I have thought of several things about my elementary school days; but that chapter is closed here on MyLot; and it's time to move on. I started my 8th grade days in junior high at a bit of a disadvantage after spending so many years in parochial school. The kids dressed differently (we had a lot of restrictions in Catholic school), they were older than I was; and they hadn't spent their junior high days in church, choir and learning about religion. The very first day in Homeroom the teacher asked how old everyone was. She started at 16 (yes, there were kids that must have flunked out several times). She asked if anyone was 13; and just about the whole room raised their hands...then she said "12". I wanted to crawl under the sink (it was a Home Economics classroom). I feebly raised my hand. This was the first time skipping a grade showed its disadvantage. I was the only non-teenager in the room. And then there was the fact that I had spent so many years attending school in ONE classroom with one nun. Now I had to go from room to room to attend classes with different teachers and go to a cafeteria for lunch instead of eating at my desk. Oh yes; and I had a locker. When I left school that afternoon, I was walking in front of the school; and 3 racky girls were behind me (you know,,,,the ones with the ratted hair, black clothing, some leather and heavy makeup)...one was stepping on the back of my shoe. She was taunting me and telling me to go to h**l. Apparently my long black coat and my white-and-black saddle shoes made me an outcast. My mother and I had to go out right away and buy me a pair of penny loafers, a couple of new outfits and a different coat. To be continued... I, too, went to a public high school after attending a parochial school for most of my schooling. But in my case, I got lucky because the public school I was attending was brand-new and all the students were ones who were re-zoned there from other high schools in the area, so it was like everybody was starting out fresh and new. I was able to fit in right away. But your mention of having to change classes with different teachers and eating lunch in a lunchroom instead of at your desk brought back memories to my first few days at the new high school. I was a bit overwhelmed, but thankfully I had met some new friends that were able to show me around and help get me pointed in the right direction.

@LindaOHio I got really lucky, that’s for sure. And I prided myself in the fact that I didn’t belong to any particular clique, so I got along with everyone. That was a big help too.

I'm glad you had a good transition. It was a big adjustment for me, especially in the education aspects.

Elementary school years were interesting for me as well. Sounds like both your experience in public schools and the years in Catholic schools were good ones.

I enjoy reading about your school years. I was almost a year older than my classmates because my birthday is in December, but I skipped the 5th grade which put me the same age as those kids, but they still felt older than me. I cried every morning to stay home.

Aw, that's terrible. My school days were OK until I went to high school. More to come on that.

Kids can be so cruel. I hope the taunting didn't go on too long.

Amazing to read about your journey. I can see how different it was than many of us in that attended public schools. Sorry to hear about those crazy bullies. They seem to be everywhere.

I went to a Christian school. I bet we would have a lot in common there.
