10 Beatles Songs - #10

It was really hard to pick the last song out of the zillions of songs that the Beatles have recorded; however, here is "The Long and Winding Road". It was released in 1970 one month after the breakup of the Beatles and became their last #1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. Written by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon/McCartney duo, Paul said he came up with the title during one of his first visits to his High Park Farm in Scotland. He looked at a road "stretching up into the hills". He later wrote the song at his farm in 1968, inspired by the mounting tension among the Beatles. Author Howard Sounes sees the lyrics as McCartney expressing dismay at the direction his personal life was taking, as well as looking back nostalgically at the Beatles' history. McCartney said in a couple of interviews: "...I have always found inspiration in the calm beauty of Scotland" and "...I like writing sad songs". It's "all about the unattainable, the door you never quite reach...the road that you never get to the end of". "And still they lead me back To the long, winding road You left me standing here A long, long time ago Don't leave me waiting here Lead me to your door" Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons

This is a great song and, again, good to know a bit of the background to it.

Yes, that one was a very melancholy song. Kind of like Yesterday, wasn't it? Paul could write some terrific ballads!
