The Little Man

One of my all-time favorite movies is Double Indemnity, the 1944 film noir classic starring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson….all in roll reversals from what I grew up with. To me, Robinson was the quintessential “bad guy,” while MacMurray was the lovable My Three Sons dad (and inventor in The Absent-Minded Professor) and MISS Barbara Stanwyck as the matriarch of the Barkley family in The Big Valley. Not in this movie: Robinson was the good guy, while MacMurray and Stanwyck were sleazes. Anyway, there’s a classic scene (and a running “joke” of sorts) about Brandon Keyes (Robinson’s character) and his “little man.” Early in the film he said the “little man” was a feeling in his gut that screamed “something’s wrong here” when he saw a “phony claim” in the insurance company. Robinson’s “little man” paid me a visit today. I mentioned, in passing, that I have some ceiling issues. Not the roof (although it could stand to be replaced), but the ceiling. It’s cracking in a few places, mostly near old (as in, when I first moved in 33 years ago) repair work from a leaking roof. (So much for that great house inspection they did to make sure the house was fit enough for a VA loan. ) I’ve called a number of companies (as I mentioned when I went to the Home Remodeling Show last week) and gotten nothing much. “We’re covered up, we’ve got all we can do,” as I’ve quoted Tim Wilson’s routine about construction work before. Ah, but one did come out today. Things seemed great initially. Then the little man started kicking. The drywall guy came out to take measurements and was apprehensive over the notion of him having to cover my furniture for the ceiling repair. He asked if I had a garage (not saying anything else, but implying I could just haul everything out to the garage while they worked….as if I’m 22 instead of 62….). Then all of the sudden, after I’d expressed my desire to use the company, the communications stopped. DEAD. How can someone call me half a dozen times before the appointment and zero times after it? (Oh, and I was supposed to get color samples for shingles…nope.) Robinson’s “little man” served him well in Double Indemnity. I’m going to pay attention to my little man, too. Brandon Keyes (Robinson) explaining his “little man” early in Double Indemnity:

What a hassle and runaround you seem to be getting. Houses are an investment. That is what we have to keep telling ourselves.

I keep telling myself that. It’s an investment. And free rent.

I hope so too. At least the ceiling isn’t going anywhere (except down ).

@FourWalls you made me laugh especially since Ringo being a male cat is trying to jump so high it seems he wants to raise the roof

I understand why older people sell their homes and move into apartments. This sucks. Of course, even at the price they quoted me ($18,000), that’s rent for a year and then I’m free, while after a year they’ll still want more rent. So I’ll keep the headache and the house.

We mostly call them tiles here so I was wondering how you could choose the colour of your shingles rash. I think I got up too early!

Just another case of "two countries separated by a common language."

I have found from past experience that you have to be so, so careful when hiring contractors. Have you by any chance checked on the BBB website before calling anyone? We've always had good luck with the ones that are rated A+ and are BBB Accredited. Good luck.

It’s not a “scam,” it’s just more work than it needs.

What a great movie!!! Who knew Steve Douglas could be such a sneaky rat? Sorry about your construction issues. I've had similar experiences. How does someone turn down work after showing such interest? At least you did not suffer Fred MacMurray's fate.

We had a tornado hit part of town in April, so I’m sure that the roofers can make plenty by scamming the insurance companies instead of having to worry about some old lady who’s paying for her own roof repair. It’s one of my favorite movies!

It's good to listen to our "little man". I'm going to look up that movie, it sounds good. We are watching Galaxy Quest. Somehow we never got around to seeing this before. It is pretty good.

We watched this in American Cinema class in college. Our professor (a sweet little nun) said this was quite a controversial movie in its day because of all the lust and murder in it, not to mention that the original final scene was MacMurray’s character sitting in the electric chair right before they threw the switch. A lot of actors turned down the Walter Neff role because he was so sleazy, but MacMurray took it…and made it his own.

I love movies from the 1940s, but I think I'm in the minority.
