Honoring Those On Memorial Day Weekend

A long holiday weekend in the US. Many forget what we are actually remembering and honoring. Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The process of laying down the flags takes roughly four hours and Master Sgt. Gabriel Hulse from The Old Guard makes it his mission to place as many flags as he can on the graves in the Virginia cemetery. The cemetery has also started a new tradition, called Flowers of Remembrance Day, which invites civilians lay flowers down by The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay their respects to the deceased. May we never forget those who gave all, today and forever.

I saw a meme on Facebook that summed it up perfectly: two pictures, one in color of a guy sitting in the surf with a cold one in his hand, and a black & white photo of the landing at Normandy. The caption: “Your day at the beach was paid for by their day at the beach.”

How perfect. Too many think of Memorial Day as the same as Veterans Day. I totally believe we should honor our veterans (my husband and father were veterans), but today is to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by so many.

Well said. I just don't get why so many have parades like those we'd have on Labor day or Thanksgiving, this is a day we should mourn those who gave all for our freedom.

Both of my grandfathers, my father, and three of my uncles all served bravely. Our family was very fortunate that they all came home safely (all of them fought in wars). Many were not as fortunate, and that’s not something I forget or take lightly. They gave the ultimate sacrifice. I was born on Memorial Day. My parents reminded me every year on my birthday that it was due to the sacrifices of many soldiers throughout our nation’s history that allowed me to enjoy my birthday peace. That meant a lot to me then, just as it does now.

Today is our grandson's birthday, also. He's too young to really understand the meaning of Memorial Day. But happy birthday to you.

A nation should be grateful for its heroes. It's a good gesture to have a special day dedicated to them and to honour them. You are right that people should not just take it as another holiday or a weekend to have fun and party. The significance of the day should matter to every countrymen.

We have similar National Holiday for our heroes. We call it National Hermes Day and it's observed for only one day.

My dad was a Navy vet and we visited the cemetery where he is buried on Saturday. A great many veterans are interred there. When we arrived, it looked like a sea of American flags.
