Up on the Roof

Time for another Go Fund Yourself (I’m amazed that only The Horse has gotten that joke) account. I didn’t sign my life away today, but I came close. I signed the contract to get my roof replaced. The total cost, including repairing the ceiling inside, is a little under $11,000. Before you go WOW (and yes, it is “wow” because the last time I had a new roof put on it was about $4,500 for the house AND the garage), remember that paying $1,000 a month for eleven months will pay it off. (It’s 24 months no interest, so actually I’ll pay about $500 a month.) After that, prayerfully all the replacements/repairs will be over (I’ve replaced every “big ticket item” associated with the house in the last three years: furnace, a/c, water heater, and now the roof). The average rent in Louisville is about $1,100 a month. So I’m saving a hundred bucks AND I only have to make eleven payments. The landlord would want another $1,100 if I were a tenant. A couple of things shocked me (which reiterates that I went with the correct company). First, I mentioned my apprehension regarding finding an old roofing nail in a tire. (Murphy’s Law #418, I think, says that you WILL find a roofing nail in your tire if there’s only one roofing nail removed from your roof.) He told me that they use a magnetic roller (it’s a cool thing if you’ve never seen it: looks like an old push reel mower but with a huge magnetic wheel) and go over the entire property TWICE; however, if I still find an elusive nail the company will pay for the repair. THAT is a good company!!! The second shock was when he said, “There are twelve roofs ahead of you.” My mind said “July” before he continued, “And we do about three-four roofs a day.” “So next week?” I said. “I was thinking more Friday or Saturday,” he replied, “weather permitting, of course.” I’ll bet you anything I could have found a roofer to put the roof on for two or three thousand dollars less; however, I’m happy to pay for that kind of customer service! They’ll be up on my roof and replacing it by this time next week, as long as the weather holds. I used the Drifters’ “Up on the Roof” in my just-completed countdown of favorites from 1962, so here’s Carole King — who co-wrote the song — doing the tune from a 1971 concert.

Sounds like you got a good contractor. Once that roof is on, you won't have to worry about it for 20-30 years.

Unless there’s a major storm with damage this will probably be the last roof I put on the house.

@LindaOHio — thank you. The shingles have a 35 year warranty, and that would put me at 97. I’m pretty sure I’ll be having wheelchair races in the old folks’ home by then.

@FourWalls I hope you live long enough to put on a second roof.

I imagine the increase in lumber prices factored into the cost being so high. Inflation is hitting every aspect of life these days. Carole brings a fresh vibe to this tune. Considering she wrote it her interpretation is as pleasant as The Drifters.

They thankfully didn’t have to replace any rotted wood, so that saved me a thousand dollars that was budgeted i to the cost. James Taylor’s rendition mirrors Carole’s a lot. Of course, she’s got a friend in him!

Send him over to my place when he's done. I need a few shingles replaced. On the roof... the roof of my house, not my head.

I already asked because I’m a few shingles short on my head, too. They don’t do that.

Thank you. The finance company finally got their heads out of their backsides and sent me the correct paperwork today.

She does it much differently than the Drifters did, but that’s okay. She wrote it, she should know how to interpret it.

@FourWalls I noticed that in the way that Carole sang the song a lot of different than the artists who sang it. The old saying is true "I have the gold and I write the rules."

No, because he’s married. I DID buy a savings bond for his son’s college fund, though.

It is a good price, and that discount (I qualify for ‘em all now) helps!

Thanks. The worst part is dealing with the finance company. They keep sending me the wrong information and claiming it’s the roofing company’s fault.

I’m so thankful. I sent I don’t know how many e-mails and phone calls out, starting in late April, and I had a whopping TWO call me back. (That’s why I went to the home remodeling show: roofing contractors. None of the “we’ll call you next week” people have called back. ) Obviously I picked the right company.

I am glad you went with the company which gave you upfronts, the magnetic roller (I have seen it used and it does a great job), and that they can be there fairly quickly. I hope this will be it for you for a while with repairs/replacing.

I’m running out of things to repair. Everything else that’s a big ticket item (water heater, air conditioner, heater) has been replaced. After this I might have to break things

Too funny about Go Fund Yourself. Sounds like great customer service. That really helps the sticker shock.

It’s not all that bad a sticker shock, honestly. I would have fainted if I’d asked about a metal roof (which would have been about $20,000 ).

I had no idea that Carole King co-wrote that song. That's pretty neat and I love it. I am glad you found a company to do your roof so quickly.

JJ yelled at me because I used three Carole King songs in the 1962 countdown (“Up on the Roof,” “The Loco-Motion,” and “Crying in the Rain”). She’s a remarkable songwriter. As for the roof, there’s a reason that highly-rated roofers ARE highly-rated roofers.
