A time for every season under heaven

I got a letter from my friend Winnie in Scotland yesterday that her husband Roger has died.
He had gone on holiday to Greece where they had gone many times over the years. He drowned and it's still under investigation. Since it happened in a different country, it's a nightmare of red tape and legal formalities.
Winnie and I have been friends since seventh grade in Jersey City, NJ. We had such a fun little gang of friends. A few times when my family would come to NC for a visit, she often came with us.
After two years in NJ, we were transferred by the military to California, but Winnie and I stayed in touch. Years later she and Roger came to visit us here in NC. Roger brought us a bottle of very expensive whiskey (bourbon?) and a can of haggis which we never opened, lol. But we had such a great visit with them.
They never had children and Winnie doesn't have any close relatives either. But they have friends and a good church in their small town. I wish so much I could be there with her now.
I just talked to her on the phone and she sounds okay. There's so much paper work and she doesn't know when they'll be able to have his funeral. It happened three weeks ago, but Roger had everyone's contact info on his iPad which is still in Greece so it took a week for her letter to arrive here.
I know there's a season for everything, including life and death. But it doesn't make it any easier.

Oh so sorry to hear about your friend. I guess the initial shock has worn off a bit by now. It is good she has her church friends to support her,.

We've been friends for many years and she really doesn't have any family now.

@1creekgirl Dying abroad is just so distressing for a family and so complicated to sort out. Thinking about Winnie.

Thank you so much. I don't know what island he was on in Greece. That had been their favorite holiday spot for 20 years.

I am so sorry to hear about Roger. I can't imagine losing my husband; and my condolences go out to Winnie and all of Roger's friends and relatives.

Thanks, Linda. It was so sudden and unexpected. I know Winnie wishes she had been there, but it might not have made any difference.
