This is a top five weather day, with a breeze and low 80s for a high. After four and a half days where our temperature didn’t drop below 80F, it’s most welcome. Speaking of top five, it’s top five time in this look at hits that Roger Miller wrote, part of the two-fer countdown inspired by a request from @xander6464 . You may know this one. #5: Tall Tall Trees - Alan Jackson (No, Linda, too country.) I could also stick this one in the “songs you might not know were covers” list. Country superstar (and one of the final neotraditionalists out there) Alan Jackson had a hit with this in 1995 when he recorded it as an “extra” song to go on a greatest hits album. That was the third time it was released. The first time was by George Jones. Miller’s rendition was next. And then along came Jackson! This is a lighthearted look at the way love makes a guy spend all his money. It’s a pretty stark contrast to Roger’s recording featured today, but there were two distinct sides to Roger Miller. And that’s what made him such a legend. Tall Tall Trees Written by Roger Miller and George Jones Recorded by Alan Jackson Released as a single, 1995 I’ll give it my utmost attention:

This explains why I knew all the words to Alan Jackson's cover the first time I heard it played on the radio. I looked up Miller's version and it all came back to me.

Did you have the same reaction when he covered Tom T. Hall’s “Little Bitty”?

@FourWalls Now that you mention it, yes, yes I did. Alan's version has a faster tempo, but I knew the words. Gads! How many more covers are there that I should have recognized but for the fog of time gone by?

I'm all for tall, tall trees. I love trees and have so many photos of them.

I like those tall trees in the south with all the Spanish moss on them. Oh, I like the song, too.

Well, howdy, how are you!? Figures you wouldn’t know this. Springsteen should cover it for New Jersey and call it “Tall Tall Refineries.”

@FourWalls I'm not really a Springsteen fan. I'd pick Bon Jovi over Bruce.

A fine day indeed! A respite before another week of 100-degree heat indices.
