The Cloud Burst

When I was in my mid-twenties (mid-70s) I was working as a cocktail waitress. My boyfriend, MP, at the time, would come in toward the end of the night to pick me up. He would set in my section and throw garnishes at me from across the room.
One evening we left the bar and got into the ragtop Corvette Stingray he had been working on and had decided to drive to pick me up even though the breaks weren't great on it.
About a 1/2 a mile down the road a purple Baracuda pulled up, revved its engine and my boyfriend took him up on the race. We were soon sailing down the road way too fast for the city streets.
Suddenly there was a crack of thunder and a sudden cloud burst making the streets slick. The car went out of control and we ended up in a clearing off the side of the road. I had been thrown from the car and lay in the grass a few feet away. When I woke up my boyfriend was slumped over in the car.
Luckily a nearby resident had seen the accident and called emergency. The purple Baracude had just speeded on down the road.
I had a concussion and MP was in a coma. The metal strip around the rag top had caused a brain stem injury.
When I got out of the ER I went directly to my job to talk to my boss. He was understanding(unusual for him) and gave me time off.
His mother and father were wonderful. They let me in to see him and spend time in his room with him. A week went by and on the eighth MP had a cardiac arrest and died. I was devastated and I still visit his grave on occasion. He was such a nut. Oh, dear.
