I saw my grandsons and granddaughter Monday

Although it hurts knowing that my daughter-in-law took the kids across the country making it even more difficult for my son to see them, I am glad she decided to land within two hours of where I live. I don't currently have a lot of love for her, I swallowed my discomfort to see the kids. The youngest is very shy and ducked behind the doorway in his bedroom and quickly asked his mother who I was. She explained and after that it was smooth sailing. Mainly, we were watching an animated movie they already had on while I tried to take pictures. I managed to get a couple of Oliver's face, but in most, he is hiding. My granddaughter preferred to stay in her room most of the time. Oliver became my buddy. It's difficult for me to go up the stairs, so I was last to get in after returning from lunch. Oliver stood by and waited for me at the apartment building door, holding it open for me. Then when I sat on the steps just to take the pressure off my back, he came down and stayed with me until I got to the apartment door, which he opened for me. Sweet little guy. Anyway, it was an animated visit. The boys have no off switch. We didn't stay for fireworks because I needed to get home to put the trash out. But it was really good to see them and to see just how much they've grown in six years. I don't want another six years to go by.

It's hard to be so far away from your grandchildren that years go by between visits. That happens to me, too. Kids grow so quickly.

It is. They grow up and don't know you.

We are trying to see our granddaughters every year now but travel is so expensive. I hope you can find some creative ways to connect with yours.

How sad that your ex-daughter in law has taken her kids so far away.

Especially now that he doesn't have the high paying job he used to have. They shut down the wells when the pandemic hit.

@rebelann My kids didn't see my parents often. I lived in Utah and they lived in New Jersey. That changed when I moved back home when Mr daughter was 10 and my son 15. But he moved back to Utah with his father a year later. We've stayed here.

I can't say I blame you that really is a long time. Hopefully you can make it a tradition.

I was happy I could see them, for sure. I can't get down on the floor to play with them, but just being there made a difference.
