Wimbledon fever!

The Wimbledon tennis tournament is in full swing, and tennis fever is gripping the nation – or at least parts of it. I’m not an ardent sport spectator and I’m a useless tennis player so it doesn’t do much for me, but my Dad was very keen on it. And it is regarded as a key part of the British summer, with its tradition of watching the matches while enjoying champagne and strawberries. So I smiled when I saw that someone in our local town had crocheted this cute Wimbledon-themed topper for the post box! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

That's certainly a very cute post box topper. Australia has Nick Kyrgios in the final and he'll play Djokovic. Both have very bad attitudes in my opinion and hopefully they'll get right up each other's noses. I might watch the finals just to see the sparks fly. I might even barrack for Djokovic.

@Fleura I certainly wouldn't want to be any of the umpires - or even a ball girl/boy.

I am not a tennis fan and wouldn't mind if it wasn't everywhere. Still, it is only for two weeks. I do like the toppers, though!

It all passes me by really, it only ever impacted me when I was growing up because my Dad was a big tennis fan (and used to be a keen player too).

@Fleura I had a go at tennis way back in the 70s and decided it was not for me! Today is the last day, so respite from Wimbledon fever. I have been sneaking a peek at the cycling, but I can't sit and watch it for long

@Ronrybs I was rubbish at tennis, rather to my Dad's disappointment I think. One summer when I was 15 or 16 there were even free tennis lessons you could go and join; I think I was the only person who got worse over a few weeks! I love table tennis though!

I don't really enjoy tennis. I love volley ball. When ever the game is on, I never want to miss it.

I'm not really a keen spectator of any sports, I'd rather be doing something myself.

@Fleura There seems not to be any tradition like yours ,but there are many devoted ball game fans who go wherever the ball teams that they like are.

Do you have sporting events that have become a great tradition like this?

I am not a fan of sport, of course going through the morning news in the newspapers I notice the major sport events. This crocheted tennis team is just too cute.

@Fleura I am sure that a lot of time was needed to complete this, but it's really cute.

It is isn't it? Someone must have a lot of spare time but it does bring a smile to people's faces!

@fleura I’ll bet whoever knitted that has a lot of tea cosies and toilet roll disguisers. And why not? Even in the heat of Africa we always had a cosy on the teapot. We also had a little silver bell that summoned someone to pour the tea. How far I have fallen.

I play a lot of tennis - people shout at me that I dont play properly lol.Im more like a chess player moving people around with lobs and drops shots. I would rather play than watch though so I dont understand people that watch that have no particular interest in what they are watching

Some people just go to Wimbledon, Ascot etc because they are the 'places to be seen' I guess, they have no interest in tennis or horse-racing. I would have thought that would be a very boring way to spend a day but I guess they just drink and socialise!
