Ants in the kitchen, boo hiss boo

A couple months ago, I started having one or two ants wandering around the kitchen counter, which was clean enough that just my wiping it off a few times a day made them realize nothing was there for them. But I didn't know where they were coming in.
Today, when I came down to get breakfast, it was like an ant army had moved in. They were all over the counter and a few on the table! I hate putting out ant poison, but I did, and they all thought it was a great treasure to take back to their nest. Well, I could follow their path and discovered they were coming in through a ventilation grille behind the refrigerator.
Now I have to decide how to block that grille from ants while still allowing it to ventilate.
What do you to to get rid of bugs in your kitchen?

@Ronrybs My cats have recently discovered that bugs in the air are fun to chase. Even when they are imaginary bugs.

Regular cleaning with vinegar or lime water helps. Keep a few fresh cloves there on the kitchen shelf. Even that keeps the ants away.

@arunima25 I will. I have plenty of clove powder.

We usually buy those sticky pads instead. Poison in the kitchen is a bit risky even if it is insect poison.

Sticky pads are a no-no in my house. If the cats accidentally stepped on one, it would be terrible. Once I had a hamster get stuck to one. I did get her free, but it was traumatic.

I have been using ground cloves to keep out the tiny ants and so far it has worked plus it is not toxic to me. Also you might try bay leaf, many pests do not like bay leaf.

I keep bay leaves in my drawers to keep cockroaches away. It seems to work because I haven't had any cockroach "things" in my drawers this year.

My mum would always try to follow their trail right back to their nest and poison that. Sometimes it was a hundred metres away down in the paddock somewhere.
