Culling the Book Shelves

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has trouble resisting the urge to buy books. But, for me, things are slowly changing, from necessity. Firstly, books are expensive and as much as I want to support authors, I'm needing to cut back. And my buying habits are changing. I'm finding plenty to read from my well-stocked local library, both hard copy books and e-books. I also find the library a great place to go to read. Then there's my book shelves. In the next year or so I'm hoping to move to a smaller home and so recently made the decision to cull my massive book collection. I decided I could retain only two book shelves, and so the cull began. I watched a useful YouTube video encouraging me to think of the book shelf as a container. What fitted into that container could stay, the rest had to go. The books I couldn't part with went back onto the shelf first. After that I put back any books that would fit. Once the shelf was full decisions had to be made. If a book wouldn't fit, I had to consider whether the book in my hand was more or less important to me than any of the books on the shelf. And so a successful cull began. The photo above shows the finishd result for my main shelf, with room to add a few more still in another room. Boxes of books went away to a local charity book shop. I still go to local seondhand book sales. But now I buy fewer books and then return them to the same charity, so someone else can enjoy them. My book life is much more organised now and, as I mentioned above, I'm a great supporter of my local library.

I love libraries. I also love:my own books. Many I haven’t yet read.We also have a book box at the park where we give a book and take a book. It would e so hard for me to decide what books to keep and which to donate. I have one wall of my apartment covered in bookshelves If I ever move from here I’ll have to donate most of my books.

@valmnz Thinking about that as I boxed them helped me get started on them. I hate dusting.

Wish we had a local library where we could freely borrow books and not just read it in the library. You did well in organizing your books.

@valmnz Sometimes, one must be ruthless to get there. You did well.

Thanks. It was a bit of a mission, but I got there by being ruthless.

@valmnz he does write and I’m a first time writer that doesn’t mean I have anything printed yet. When I do I’ll have a copy yes of my work. Of course I read it why I’m writing it

@valmnz How painful it is culling one’s books. I’ve been doing it and they are sent to charity shops so that relieves the pain a bit. However most of my books are French novels which are in high demand and they’ll just gather dust on the shelves. In 16 months I retire and we’ll move from a 5 bedroom, 3 reception sprawl to a much smaller place. Ouch!

Definitely ouch! Even reducing from 3 bedrooms to 2 is proving a challenge.

The only books I buy these days are from a few authors whose books I already own. And I own them all. Otherwise I resort to the library. The cost does add up, even if the books are sold at a discount. Plus, nowhere to really put the books.

@valmnz I have a wall organizer but not much room on it for books. I’d never keep books on the floor.

My husband and I give away more than 1,000 books over the last few years and we still have too many. We don'r buy as many as we used to now.

You've done really well. We moved 15 months ago to a much smaller place and I'm pleased with my downsizing efforts. I'm still gradually getting rid of books but I'm afraid I also pick up a few here and there.

@valmnz I don't buy new either. We have a nice little library in our clubhouse for starters and there are plenty of op shops around.

I have a mini library and the bookshelves are made of inferior wood and they're already rotten. I'm planning to keep my books in a plastic container.

@valmnz In my classroom at school, some books are on the floor but they're soiled by the moisture coming from the floor. Thus, I need to put them on the rack or bookshelves.
