Time to end this music series as we approach the final month of summer. And what better way to say, "See You in September," than to use a tune recorded by the group "The Happenings." So, let's see if you give a "thumbs up" to any of these final summer songs. Comments, musings, your own favorites summer songs and trivia welcome... 1. The Lovin' Spoonful- Summer in the City -Ahh...Summer in the City whereby day its hot and crowded but at night it's a different world altogether. Just a real good summer tune, and how about those car horn sound effects... really cool! Fun fact: The sound of car horns and traffic was the first time these sounds appeared on a hit song. The Soul Survivors used the same gimmick a year later on their track "Expressway (To Your Heart)." Another great summer tune! 2. Eddie Cochran- Summertime Blues -This song shows the other side of teenage summers. The suffering kind! Yes, Summertime's not all fun and games when you wanna go with your girl on a date, but the boss man says you gotta work late. This tune has some real catchy early rock n' roll and one teenagers with summer jobs can relate to. Fun fact/Sad fact- Eddie Cochran recorded this 1958 tune at age 19 earning him a reputation as a rebel just like James Dean. Two years later in 1960 he died in a car accident (just like Dean did in 1955). 3. Elton John & Kiki Dee- Don't Go Breaking My Heart -No summer in the title but don't worry, it will be included on the bonus question. Anyway, how about this smash duet showing off Elton's ability to work well with other performers. What a great video as well. This was the second biggest-selling record of 1976 in both the UK and US and hit #1 on the charts. TRIVIA CHALLENGE ***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. Let's see how many answers you know. See if you can guess these selections and the bonus... Words in quote marks provide valuable clues! Name today's tune, artist or facts: 1. This is not a song with summer in the title, but one that would definitely get your "hips to shakin'." The song was recorded by a fellow with a "funny first name" which could describe his "plump body." His last name is the same as a "popular board game" where jumps are made to win the opponent's pieces. He first topped the charts in 1960 with a song called "The Twist." -Can you name this singer and his follow up hip shakin' song of 1961? 2. This classic song by "4 guys from New Jersey" was released in "August 1962" and spent 5 weeks at #1 on the record charts. It had a "girl's name for a title" and featured a "soaring falsetto voice" singing lead on the song. This song was their first to chart and helped gain these "Jersey Boys" a deal on Vee Jay records. -Do you know the name of this group and their chart-topping single? Bonus: 3. This tune not only has "summer" as part of the title but contains a "year" in it too. It's a great song with the artist looking back on "summertime; playing his six-string guitar, starting a band, and falling in love." As the singer says in the song, "those were the best days of my life." This "Canadian artist" had a few hits before this song was released, his biggest being "Straight from The Heart," but this tune helped make him a star. -Can you name this singer and his summer-titled tune? Here are a few more Feel-Good Summer Songs that say it's summer to me. See if you agree... The Boys of Summer/Don Henley, Walking on Sunshine/Katrina & The Waves, Suddenly Last Summer/The Motels, California Girls/The Beach Boys, and School's Out/Alice Cooper. Summer will end soon enough so let's not "get burnt" solving these answers! If you're stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. Or as James Taylor would say "You've Got a Friend" if you need a helping hand. Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will see you in September with some more musical series. Hope you can wait till then, lol. Stay tuned... Source- Wikipedia & songfacts.com
