Is being realistic being negative?

Stating a fact about not being able to do something is not being negative. It's being truthful.
Accepting the fact that the love of your life who left you will never come back is not being pessimistic. But being realistic.
Not always seeing the rainbows in every situation does not really mean you are a dark person.

I’ve always considered myself an optimist who deals in realism. I like to look on the bright side of things, but prepared to deal with whatever is thrown at me.

That's how it should be. I like facing reality and facts but that doesn't mean I'm a pessimist. When I wrote I won't survive in the wilderness, did that sound like I was a pessimist?

@moffittjc I know you can survive but I know my survival skill. And I'm just thinking that I couldn't even handle wild animals. I would be devoured by them for sure. But with you, I have a better chance. And I wouldn't mind being devoured by you.

@toniganzon Haha, yes you sounded like a pessimist! But you were just being real about what you expect your chances to be with survival in the wilderness. I would have sounded optimistic, but the reality is that I have been highly trained for such types of survival and I would stand a good chance of being successful.

Acceptance is already beginning on a good note. I believe you need to get over the incident, give yourself some time to forgive yourself, and treat yourself to some pampering to get yourself out of it. It would be horrible if you refused to get out of that circumstance and continued to feel sorry for yourself.

@toniganzon Well just responding to your post.
It's good that you are not in that situation.

@rsa101 Fortunately, but I know how to face fact and reality but that doesn't mean I am being negative.

I get accused of that too. Micromanager who is thankfully gone asks how we handle a certain situation, so I speak up, and get told that instead of describing it negatively, focus on the positives. I wasn't describing anything negatively, I was being factual. This from the person who criticizes everything everyone does, and almost never provides positive feedback. So Happy she's gone.

@toniganzon That was incredibly insensitive. Nobody should ever tell anyone else how to grieve. Geez.

@dawnald Very insensitive. I wonder if they were happy that we lost our parents.

As long as you don't let your self get to negative and mistake it for realism. You'll be fine. You need a positive outlook, too.

@kaylachan Sure. But I'm saying that just because I know what the truth and fact is doesn't mean I am being negative.

@RasmaSandra Yes but first you have to accept the truth and the fact and then create your own happiness.

That is what we should all do. But my question is, if we accept the facts in life, does that mean we are already a pessimistic person?

@toniganzon no it does not and if you work harder to put pessimism aside then it will be easier for the positive thoughts to come

Totally agree. I think it's the same with people who lies a lot that their lies because their truth. And when the truth is revealed, they get offended.

A lot. But being realistic doesn't necessarily equate to being negative.

@toniganzon A lot of brainy people (including Socrates and Jung) have said balance is good. I would have to agree with them.

Yes, accepting the reality is also a kind of positive attitude. Accepting that something is impossible is not negativity.

@toniganzon That's the harsh reality of life. Life is a game of negative and positive. Accepting the negative and converting into positive is the way of life.

A realist doesn’t mean a pessimist. I once had a student, he was 20 years old, and i told him that he was young and an idealist. I told him i was old and a realist.

Right and accepting the truth and the fact means you are being practical and wants to continue living your life with nothing holding your back. That's not being negative.

Yeah I was told I need to think positive and not dwell on the bad (reality) always wanted me to put a positive spin on things... Sometimes there just isnt a rainbow... There is no rainbow in having intermittent power, there is no rainbow in having no running hot water, there is no rainbow in the fact my dad left us for a hoe with bills coming in with no communication so we could have at least gone on centrelink, there is no rainbow of having lived in a house with a rodent infestation for 10 years.... "least you have a house" to be fair the streets would probably be more hygenic at this point.

I completely agree. We were taught to always look on the bright side of life but somewhere along the way a lot of people misunderstood it for always coloring the world pink and not looking and accessing the situation as it is. Left a lot of people living in denial.

OH yes and then the reality is forgotten and they live in dreams with rainbows and unicorns that they tend to stay in those. And when reality hits, they simply couldn't handle the situation anymore.
