A relation by marriage has a special day today

One of our nieces lives in Harrogate in Yorkshire, England. She married an Englishman who loved Australia but his career took them to England. Today, he turns 50 so we’ve sent him good wishes and reminded him of a few days we spent with them in Ireland when we were there for our son’s wedding. In the photo, he is having a glass of Guinness in a hardware store. You can see the rat poison behind him. Vin and I found it amazing that you could buy alcohol in all sorts of places other than in hotels or bars. I hope he has a lovely day. His father-in-law (Vince’s brother) is there with them. He is the brother who lost his wife not too long ago. He and his daughter will have a few sad moments, I’m sure.

That's a nice photo. My husband would love to buy a pint of Guiness along with the latest batch of screws and nails.

@JudyEv I have never traveled and dont have an urge to do it. But the internet is full of info. Plus I liked reading a lot too.

@sallypup @wolfgirl569 I was relatively old before I did much travelling at all and I was naive enough to think most people lived like we did and had similar shops, etc. I learnt so much those first few trips.

Usually rat poison is kept locked up here. Hope Vince’s brother has a good visit with family. I’m sure it will be sad.

Here, we lock up spray paint to try to cut down on graffiti.

@JudyEv I’m not sure if spray paint is locked up. I think not.

Oh I recognized the Guinness Judy. The creamy top. Yes a few sad moments alright. Happy 50th to your relation by marriage.

Thanks for the good wishes. Vince could never get the taste for Guinness. I didn't even try.

Interesting photo, I do not think I would be comfortable drinking Guinness standing by rat poison, Anyway I hope he had a good birthday,

As I mentioned in a recent post, you need to take note of what's in the background when you take photos!! My oversight has resulted in a funny picture anyway.

@judyev You never know what the shop keeper has behind the counter. And under it.

There were little 'drinking establishments' all over the place.

I didn't realise either that you can buy booze just about anywhere in Ireland. Least they shouldn't accidentally mix up Guinness and rat poison!

@Ronrybs So true. I always think of myself as law-abiding but I would have no trouble doing the wrong thing if I think the law is stupid. Actually, I can't think of any examples but that's what I tell myself.

@Ronrybs Lots of tourists accuse our Australian states of being 'nanny states'. We do seem to have a lot of rules sometimes.

@JudyEv Same thing over here. It usually a case of I don't like these rules that infringe me, but I am quite happy with rules that infringe you!

The world is your oyster - comes to mind. The celebrations can be muted by the loss of his mother-in-law, but life goes on.

Yes, that's true. Life does go on. 50 is quite a bit milestone really.
