... secret? It's only a matter of time before I can have my son. He was taking his vitamins when this picture was taken. For the time being, my immediate family is not aware of it. I want them to be taken aback when they discover there is a new furry family member. I'm hoping he stays healthy and is prepared to be handed off to me by my friend.

Sometimes, but not about your fur baby. Why, because, family needs to know especially about a fur baby. They might even help you with your fur baby.

In some cases, yes, keeping a secret is fine. In this specific case, yes, I see no harm in surprising your family with your new furbaby son. (He's a beautiful baby.)
I'm quite sure they'll all love him just as much as you do/will.
