A Day of What If

Today is a day of reflection in much of the world. Americans, and indeed much of the world, are remembering the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At the same time Britons, and indeed much of the world, are remembering the late Queen.
We humans love to speculate. The game of “what if” is popular. We say it all the time, even if just rhetorically. The other day I’d mentioned Patsy Cline dying so young. What if she had lived to a ripe old age? What if James Dean hadn’t died so young? And, yes, what if someone had been able to stop the attacks of 21 years ago.
Here’s something that you might not think about in the “what if” department: what if her majesty the Queen had never been queen?
I’ll tell you this: the world would probably be VERY different.
For my friends in the UK and the Commonwealth, you can sleep through this because you probably know it. This is for the US audience.
You see, when she was born in 1926, she was NOT heir to the throne. Her father, Albert Frederick Arthur George, was Duke of York, not Prince of Wales. But there was a problem: Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, was just a tad bit of a playboy. There’s a quote from King George V that he said to his prime minister, Stanley Baldwin, “After I am dead the boy will ruin himself in twelve months.”
King George was quite the prophet. In fact, it took just eleven months.
Edward was in love with an American woman, Wallis Simpson; and, as 1936 progressed, he made it apparent that he was going to marry her. But there was a little problem: Simpson was a divorcée; worse, she was ALSO still married at the time (although going through divorce procedures). As “Defender of the Faith,” one of the titles the monarch holds, that didn’t set too well with the Church of England. (A quick aside: one of my all-time favorite movies is A Man For All Seasons, which is about Henry VIII butting heads with Sir Thomas More over the subject of divorce. It was Henry, wanting a divorce, who declared himself head of the church in England after the Catholic Church refused to grant him another annulment. In that light, it seems interesting that the notion of a monarch marrying a divorced woman would be controversial by the Church of England.)
Long year short: King Edward’s desire to marry Simpson created a constitutional crisis in England, and he was basically told to poop or get off the throne. So he got off the throne. On December 10, 1936 he abdicated, which elevated Prince Albert (who was not in a can
) to the throne as King George VI. In his abdication, Edward surrendered any and all rights to the throne for himself and his heirs.
This put George VI on the throne, and Princess Elizabeth as heir apparent.
Now, a few thousand paragraphs ago (sorry to be so long winded), I said “what if.” You see, Edward had an ugly secret: he was kinda fond of the policies of that guy in Germany with the mustache. In fact, Herr Hitler said that if Edward had remained king things would have been much, much different for Germany.
That’s a scary notion.
While publicly, once the atrocities of the Nazi regime became known, Edward dismissed Hitler, privately he was quoted as saying, “I never thought Hitler was that bad a chap.”
“What if,” indeed.
PHOTO: a double rainbow at my house tonight. Not as beautiful as the one over Buckingham Palace, though.
If you’re interested (and haven’t fallen asleep by now
), there’s a documentary on YouTube called The Traitor King. A book on the subject was published earlier this year. This is over an hour and a half long, so you have to be really interested.

I am not in the UK, but being European I knew the story. I am glad that Edward did not remain King... even if finally Europe is now "led" by Germany, less now than when Angela Merkel was in charge.
The husband of Queen Elizabeth (Prince Philip - also known as Philip the Greek) was her distant cousin.

It could have been a total disaster with Edward on the throne, because he believed in appeasement of Hitler.

@FourWalls I am very glad that he abdicated, he was weird, I remember that I read some stories told by his made and assistants, both he and Wallis Simpson were very weird people.

I blab too much about history, don’t I.
The second rainbow was never very bright, but you could tell it was there! I was up in the attic taking that picture.

@FourWalls Not too much at all. I always learn from your posts. Love the rainbow. A double rainbow occurs when the light is reflected twice in the drop. I remember my Dad and I talking about this many times. He said we often miss that second one because the reflection is not as bright, obviously.

Yup, what if? What if York Knitting Mills hadn't closed down and my father was still employed there? I'm guessing my folks wouldn't have sold the property and moved to Elora, etc.

And, as he was friendly with Hitler, an ugly story for Europe and the world.

@thelme55 — if I remember correctly it was at Hitler’s hideaway in Berchtesgaden.

One of a million backstories on the royals. The second rainbow never got really bright, but it was still obviously there.

A lot of leaders did not take Hitler serious at first the way many do not seem to take Trump serious, but as you can see both rose to power pretty much same way just Hitler was a lot smarter. Trump has progressively gotten worse, much like Hitler did. Not that they were progressives, just they became worse.
They both were like, well well, if they are going to let me get away with this, lets see if I can do this and I am going to do it until someone stops me.
I actually forgot today was 9/11, but think it had a major impact of why this country lost its damn mind in many ways compared to what this country was before 9/11.

I don’t think T-man is as interested in world domination as “scramble brains” (as Hogan once called Hitler on an episode of Hogan’s Heroes), he just wants to rule America. But yes, the correlations are so similar that I expect Trump to write a book called Mine Comp while in prison. (Yes, spelled that way, too.

@FourWalls I agree Trump wants to rule America, but he also at the same time cares less about America as far as how it rose to power and he also at the same time still seeing what he can get away with and also Trumps a lot older than Hitler was. He may be more in line to trying to get one of his offspring probably Don Jr to be dominate the world. He will not live long enough.

I knew that she was not born into the line to become queen. I didnt know all that led to him giving up the throne. But all things considered I am glad he did.
Love the rainbows

The Bible says, and the proclamations have made reference to it, that God establishes kings and removes them (Daniel 2:21).

Lovely rainbow photo. A lot of things would have been different in this world after a hundred or so what ifs could have been reversed.

That was an amazing post...thank you. I knew Edward was cozy with Hitler, but never thought "what if"? I think you're right; the world would be a different place.

He would have either surrendered to Germany or become their allies. A horrible thought.

Long winded or not it was an interesting bit of history you shared and a good deal of it I didn't know (or had forgotten)
I was living in NY on 9/11 and it was the scariest time of my life. I will never forget that day and it prompted me to move when I retired.

I wonder how many people left NYC after that. I’m sorry you experienced 9/11 in a far more traumatic way than most of us.

It was no secret that Prince Edward was a fan of Hitler. Aside from German Industrialists, Americans like Ford, Rockefeller, and JP Morgan actually gave aid to the war effort of Germany. Since we are on the subject of "what if", here's one...What if Japan didn't bomb pearl harbor? Hitler didn't invade Poland but instead looked eastward and (operation Barbarossa) invaded Russia. Communism would not exist, Nazism/ fascism would replace liberal ideology and an Orwellian New world order would become a reality much earlier than expected. An ultra-conservative Republican party would probably be running the US gov't.

One reason I’ll never own a Ford is because of the way Henry Ford supported Hitler’s ideologies and even encouraged them with his anti-Jewish spewing in that newspaper he owned (the Dearborn Independent).

I watched the documentary you linked here. Life didn't end well for this traitor. It's what you sow-you-reap order of things with him. Unfortunate.

Yes, it ended poorly for him, and it could have ended much worse. He could have been tried for high treason.
