When I read this article I could really relate. With the food prices today it is so difficult for families to get fruit and healthy produce. There is too much waste in the US and food banks are trying to fill up to help. I donate weekly to the one near us. This should be a requirement everywhere! France got it right!

That would be great except I can easily see supermarkets keeping stock on their shelves until it is unfit for human consumption so they won't lose any money from giving away perfectly good produce.

I agree! Too bad they can’t figure this out

@Ganma7 I know Walmart has a policy that anything that is "old" by their calculations must go into the compactor. I once saw an associate there eat a banana that was supposed to be thrown away and he was fired for it. There is no way they would agree to pass on food that could be sold.

@DaddyEvil This sign is misleading. The French Law states that the supermarkets (not the family stores), but donate the food that would spoil if kept until the day after and the food that has expired on that day NOT everything unsold, that would be ridiculous. You do not sell a box of pasta and you donate? Surely NOT.

They approved this law years ago, it was already in the air when I still lived there. i moved from France to Switzerland in 2006. They have NOT to give all the "unsold", they have to give the food that would spoil and the food on the expiry day.

That is a good rule for all to follow to help persons who need a meal since the prices of food are harsh on all of us persons who are not in the high money making homes.

This is an excellent idea. Programs like this should have been in place. Throwing food out is a shame , especially that which be be used by those with less resources

Hope the supermarkets have the conscience to donate food which are fit for human consumption.
