Migraines

I have had migraines off and (mostly) on since I was 11. I am almost 69 now. I did inherit migraines from my father, Mom almost never had a headache until she became sensitive to steroids. Even then, she knew that annoying as these new things were, they weren't migraines. So, I was reading an article about migraine triggers and things that help deal with them. And, oh my, I could relate! Screaming children! Over and above not wanting to curse another generation with migraines, the fact that babies cry was more than enough reason for me to not want to have one. Some scents... now, my wife was more sensitive to scents than I ever was, she got that from her mom who had a stroke because of a co-worker's scent... but there were some that could nearly put me down. The perfume Poison... it might as well be poison to me. I've actually met others who felt the same way. The weather, especially changes in the weather has been known to put me in bed, with a cool cloth and in a darkened room. But hot and humid can cause me to hide out in an air conditioned room and hope it'll cool off - sometime before October - I live in Texas! And remember, migraines aren't going to fix themselves. Find yourself a doctor you can trust. If they don't seem to believe you are in pain, or how bad the pain is, find another doctor! There are medications out there that can help. Migraines aren't 'just' a headache. Do for yourself what I couldn't as a child, and get help. Things are different now, if you know a child who says they have a headache, believe them. A migraine will mean they don't want to do things they love to do. It may be they are even throwing up or having to retreat to darkened rooms. Take that child to a doctor, or insist that their parents do it. Good luck.

Same as you, I inherited migraines from my father, Mom never experienced a migraine or a headache. All what you listened also triggered my migraines and I think that children screaming were the worst. People are so careless that they let their kids scream in elevators, inside the Mall, inside a restaurant, all parents should get migraines when they kids scream, we would have better educated kids.

I agree. I kid you not, if we - my brother, sister and I - had acted like kids do these days, we would've never been allowed to go any place.

@LadyDuck I don't recall having to be told, but we were generally dressed up and knew better than to act up when we were...

@ElicBxn I know, because it was the same in my family. Before we got out, my Dad called my brother and I and told us to be sure to keep quiet and not make him feel ashamed of our behavior.

I've had migraines for years. The best meds I've found to stop them is a Soma. It puts me to sleep and when I wake up, the migraine is gone. It didn't help when the migraine started and I was at work but nothing's perfect.

Yeah, there were days when they started at work. Those were bad days. I had been given Tylenol 3 that would help, until it didn't. That was when I learned I had a 'little' problem with codine... (throwing up problem)

@DaddyEvil you were lucky to have tylenol help you, I suspect a sugar pill might help me more than tylenol helps.

@ElicBxn I understand. Sometimes Tylenol just doesn't work for some people.

I am so sorry. My son suffers with those as well. They are horrible things to get.

Yeah, it was actually a relief to learn that a doctor told me that they were migraines, that 'normal' headaches don't happen as often as I was getting them.

I realized that migraines run in my family. My father had them, now my daughter and I have them, and my grandson Nathan had them at a very young age, but seems to have mostly outgrown them. He would cry in so much pain, would throw up, then he'd sleep it off after I put cold wet cloths on his forehead. I suspect he may have had them as a baby. But so thankful he seldom has them now. Hope you can find a good med for yours.

Oh, migraines as a baby sounds awful. How can a child that young tell you what hurts? I'm glad to hear he doesn't have them often now.

@1creekgirl poor kid, I had back problems, I remember my parents putting a board in my toddler bed after they figured out I had backaches from the bed without one.

@ElicBxn Looking back there were times when we couldn't console him as a baby, he just cried and cried until he fell asleep. Later around 3 or 4 we recognized the classic symptoms.

I don't get migraines, but I sometimes get tension headaches. They are sometimes really bad. I had a headache today. It was a mild one. It went away after I took a nap.

I have had tension headaches and they aren't any fun. However, this migraine I've had since shortly after they woke me up yesterday - I was sedated for a test yesterday.

I do have things that help, it is just that I can mostly still function with them. I power through many, but I sometimes pay a big price for it.

@CarolDM I have one now, in fact, I've had one all month, but going to the doctor on Wednesday made it worst.

@ElicBxn I can understand. I recently had surgery but for a different type of headache. I hope you can keep yours gone away.

My mother suffered from migraine. When I complained that my head hurt when I was still a child, she was afraid that I had inherited the disease. I'm happy to say that this is not the case. I only get the occasional headache.

You are very lucky. I have mine more frequently than Dad did, but I think in some ways Dad's were worse. Dad loved his job, but if he had to come home and lay down with an ice pack, you know it is bad.
