Our internet provider breached our privacy

It’s awful, our internet provider informed us that the personal details and identity documents we provided might have been breached as a hacker has downloaded personal details and identification documents submitted when we first registered for internet provision. This is serious as these information can be sold to scammers, identity thieves and extortionists to gain evil intent or even money. They have informed most customers and advised to change their drivers licences, passports and other government cards. I wonder why they need to keep these ID documents and information. They should have been destroyed as soon as the customers were positively identified. Do you feel safe giving your personal information and Identification documents to banks, internet providers and other entities that require them!

They need to keep this information for future use in case someone tries to pretend they are you. I'm not sure what you/they mean by 'changing' Government I.D.s because those I.D.s are still going to contain the same information...

They would have those info in their system, those sensitive documents can be destroyed as they contain sequence numbers that is crucial in ID theft. Our government IDs are unique and individualized. If these fall into wrong hands, it can mean identity and financial ruin for the original owners, extortion at the very worst.

We are OBLIGED to give our personal information to the Bank, the Internet Providers do not have the copy of our documents, but they have our personal data. This is a small country, should they notice that someone is trying to fake our identity they would automatically inform the police.

The same with the banks here. The internet providers started to ask for driver’s licenses, health cards, passports to some due to the terror attacks using smart phones..that are usually connected with internet providers. Hopefully, with this incident, our government will do something for these providers to safeguard these sensitive documents. It’s really good to live in a small country that can look after its residents with security.,

@vickyrose - We only had to show our ID when we signed for the Internet. The Bank has the photocopy of our ID, but they did not even ask to have it updated when we renewed it, they know us very well. I never use my smartphone for bank transactions, only my home desktop computer, it is a lot safer.

In answer to your last question, no, I don't really feel safe but you can't do anything much unless you provide all this personal information.

We are obliged to give it to them. Privacy breaching is serious concern in today's time. And I don't know of any fullproof way by which it can be totally avoided. The truth is that we are very vulnerable in this digital era.

@vickyrose Yes, I am also among them. But I can't avoid it everywhere. We have obligations to give it to banks etc..I know at the back of my mind that despite taking all security measures on social media and public platform, I am never fully secure.
