If you’ve listened to John Prine’s song “Paradise,” you know it’s a sad lament for how “progress” destroys towns. Earlier this year I mentioned that the headline in the newspaper when the Paradise, Kentucky post office closed in 1967 read, “Progress Closes the Gates to Paradise.” Here are some of the marks of “the progress of man,” as Prine put it in the song. You see the railroad tracks where “Mr. Peabody’s coal train” hauled the coal (and the town) away, as well as a remnant of some of the massive amounts of coal pulled from the land. Finally, there’s the contrast of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) sign for the Paradise power plant and the cemetery indicating that the town of Paradise, like the people in the cemetery, is long gone. I primarily had @TheHorse on my mind when I was toodling around the various spots mentioned in the song today. In reality, whether you’re a fan of John Prine’s or not, and whether you like the song or not, there are valuable lessons to be learned from the past. Sometimes “the progress of man” isn’t the best way forward. One more time, here’s the legendary John Prine song “Paradise”:

Lots of songs about it. One about Ohio by the Pretenders, “My City Was Gone.”

@FourWalls Do you know Black Water (or is it Black Waters?) by Jodi Stecher? I'll have to check. I forget if he wrote it or covered it.

I hope you enjoyed the tune. It's one of my favorite John Prine songs.

I hope you get to. At least I got to take you there virtually. I had you and another JP fan on my mind the entire time I was there. It’s a must-see for Prine fans (there’s a post on the JP Shrine site of a pictorial tour of the song). I didn’t go up Airdrie Hill because everywhere I looked there were “no trespassing signs,” so that’ll be for another time. Or someone more daring than I.

@FourWalls I wonder if I'd be bold enough to go part way up.

I read in the comments that some have never heard of John Prine. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me but it does. Such important songs that he wrote, along with our own Eric Bogle.

Even though “Paradise” is set in a very specific place (as I’ve shown in the pictures) the message is universal. And who doesn’t love “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” and can see their own veterans in that song?!?

@FourWalls We have a 'Paradise' in WA too but it's just a locality. There is a sign in the middle of a big green paddock.

"Progress" peels off the best layers of many towns.

And for what? I mentioned the fact that Union hero Major Robert Anderson was born in Louisville. They just put an Aspen Dental Office on the site of his birth.

Amazing John Prine song. A fan here. And your story is very sad. Progress comes with a hefty price tag.

It was all done in the name of progress which is so sad. The song told it all. What a nice song.

I can appreciate strip mining over going into the ground, because there’ve been so many coal mining disasters in and around Kentucky (in West Virginia in particular). But, as Prine said on a Johnny Cash special, “I realize they needed the coal but I kinda miss the town.”
