Good morning! It’s scheduled maintenance day on Bestill. While he’s getting a fresh dose of oil I’m having lunch and ready to assault your senses with another song that has “Ruby” in the title. This was inspired by my recent trip to Ruby Falls in Chattanooga. Here’s one that the older people probably knew was going to show up.
#5: Ruby Baby - Dion
For those who don’t know, Dion does have a last name: DiMucci. You’re welcome.
Dion came to superstardom in the saddest of ways: he was forced into the “star” role on the Winter Dance Party after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens. Not that he doesn’t have the talent (consider his hits like “A Teenager in Love,” “Runaround Sue,” or “The Wanderer”), but that’s a terrible way to get thrust into the limelight.
As for this song, it was originally recorded by the Drifters, but it was the Dion version in 1962 that became an international smash. It’s been covered countless times since then (I remember Billy “Crash” Craddock doing a country version in the 70s), but this is pretty much the definitive version.
Dion is 83 and still touring. Rock on, Dion!

Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
Recorded by Dion
Released as a single, 1962

Yes, that magical time of the early 60s. Some great music from that era!

I did not know that--his last name or how he came into stardom.
How sad.

I used one of his songs in an oldies countdown and put his last name in the discussion. I got a lot of “I never knew his last name” comments.

Yes, also to this one. I like it. Is The Rolling Stone one coming up?

I’ll see about doing country covers of rock songs and vice versa.

Not aware of this. But definitely doesn't sound a good way to come to stardom.

Dion was one of the featured performers on the Winter Dance Party, with Buddy Holly being the star or headliner. Certainly not his fault.

@FourWalls I am not aware of any of them. I don't have much knowledge of music outside my county. Only recently I have been introduced to a lot of Global music by my children and I appreciate them. Children these days are Global citizens, courtesy the technical advancements.
.
It was not his fault. He was destined to the stardom this way.

And to think he’s a Bronx boy and has a play about his life. Tsk!

Not only do I know this song; but I met Dion when he was appearing at Cain Park Theater and I was taking classes there. He had his pic taken with me and wasn't the least bit put out. A guy with class and very sweet.

That is super cool! The people back in the 50s and early 60s seemed to be very cool, I think because they, like everyone else, thought rock and roll was a fad.
