We're getting used to our doorbell

The photo has nothing to do with the post but it's cute. Our lifestyle village has only recently filled up and many have been buying bits and pieces for their brand-new houses. Doorbells are one of the things that many have bought recently. In our fifty years of marriage, I can’t remember us ever having a doorbell. People had to knock if they came to the door. But we have a doorbell here and we’re getting used to it. When it rang the first few times, we ran around picking up all the phones, trying to find out what was making the noise! We’re not very smart sometimes. However, we haven’t had the same trouble as our friends ten doors up. When the neighbours’ doorbell rings, theirs does too – and vice versa. I must ask one day if they managed to sort the problem.

It is funny how electronic devices can get mixed up. We had a neighbor once who had an electric organ in her home. It took them a while to figure out why they would sometimes find their garage door had opened for no reason. It turned out that there was one key on the organ that, when she hit it, would cause the garage door to open and close. It was the same frequency as their garage door opener!

@JudyEv - Yes, I think that there is nearly always an explanation for things that seem "supernatural." We just need to figure it out. However, I still love to hear "ghost stories!"

@DeborahDiane We went to a 75th birthday and a young man went round each table doing a few magic tricks. I know there are explanations for them all but some of them were incredibly clever. He didn't touch a woman's hand but a small black cross appeared on it at one point. It boggles the mind!

That would be very spooky indeed! But just about always, there is an explanation for these things.

We've always had a doorbell. Since we stay in an apartment complex, we can hear our neighbours doorbell as well. Sometimes I open the door, only to realise that someone's ringing the neighbours doorbell.

That's funny. I suppose it's because you weren't used to it. I'm thinking about getting a doorbell for my apartment. The door is so thick it's hard to hear when anyone knocks. There have been times when it was my overworked imagination as nobody was there. Then there are the times when I tentatively answer the door not expecting anyone to be there, only to find someone was there.

It needs to be fixed so that it can work well. The bell must be heard from a relatively far distance

This is a cute photo. It has been a long time since I didn't have a doorbell. Funny to compare our lives. That is too funny getting used to the sound.

@judyev We have two front doors (yes) and different people use different doors. There is a bell press at each door, both connected to the same bell. So when the bell is rung we don’t know which door to open, and invariably choose the wrong one. By the time we then go the other front door the visitor has decided to try the door we’ve just closed and so it continues.

@JudyEv Pardon granted. Don’t know who decided this was a good idea. When the bell goes I go to one door and my wife to the other - if we’re both in. And the doors are quite a distance apart.

That's funny. Can you put a sign on saying 'use the other door'? And then, being Irish, you could put a sign on the first door saying 'see other door for instructions'?? (Pardon my mirth )

@JudyEv That happens to us all the time at work. When truck drivers arrive to make deliveries, they have to check in with me at the office. We have a security door that remains locked at all times, so they have to ring a doorbell to let us know they are here, and then we let them in. But you can’t hear the doorbell from outside, so they ring it multiple times and then bang on the door. It gets pretty annoying, especially since we’ve told the drivers multiple times they only have to push the doorbell button once.

Sometimes a doorbell doesn't work or you can't hear if it's working or not. Then you knock and the bell is working and you feel like you're being impatient.

@RubyHawk That's basically why we got a doorbell and why we have it quite loud. If we were out the back we'd never hear a knock.

@JudyEv My granddaughter rang the doorbell while I was on the deck and I didn't hear it, she called me on her cell phone to tell me she was at the door. I told her next time she came to the door to knock so I'd hear her.

As you look at picture my door is on the right.
Hmm, unusual problem with doorbells your neighbors having. Hope management fixes it quickly. My place, my door and neighbors door right next to each other. My neighbor had lots of knockers visiting I'd ask who is it, but it's for my neighbor... I'd excuse myself and say thought was my door. My door is on the right, as you look at picture.

@Treborika Yes, our doors are close to each other, and knocking can be interesting. Our doorbells are easy to discern. Knocking is very difficult to know if it's mine or neighbor door. So I began to look first then, ask...who is it.

Oh my gosh the doorbell mix up with the neighbors is awful. That would drive me batty. That’s funny you and your husband couldn’t figure out the sound when you would first hear it. There was a doorbell here for many years. When my ex remodeled my floor he cut the wire accidentally or something and it never worked since.

@Fleura What really intrigued me was the bell system they had in big houses to have maids come running. Downstairs they could tell which room needed a servant. It seemed very complex.
