Just some time after the Saudi Arabia upsetting Argentina 2-1, we have another surprise (or shock?): Japan defeating the many times Cup winner Germany by 2-1. The identical 2-1 score could be another coincidence or well, whatever!
This is the second straight tournament that Germany has lost its opening game in the World Cup and just the 3rd time ever.
These wins could mean many things.
First, the laggards seem to be catching up.
Secondly, many Asian N African nations have players playing in many European leagues now.
Third : Government and Business interest in Football and more funding .
Fourth: So far the bigger football giants might be complacent in the tournament earlier on.
Anyways, there is a lot to analyse!!
Yet all such results make the World Cup more exciting.

I didn't follow this much since I have no TV at home and internet connection is poor.

A big morale booster for Japan.
Something that makes the field wider!

Yes, it was an unexpected result that Japan won. The Japanese team has improved a lot over the past years.
