It’s easy to forget them!

After the drought we’ve had this summer, our water levels are now bring topped up again with plenty of torrential rain. Over the last couple of weeks we’ve had days of heavy rain, days of dry intervals with sudden sharp showers, and days of light rain interspersed with sudden heavy downpours Our water butts are overflowing (must get some more) and since it’s really mild as well, all the plants that entered a kind of dormant state in the drought have now started flourishing again. Everything in the garden is green and blooming! With all this water about it’s easy to forget that of course the indoor plants aren’t getting any water. The poor things are drying out on the windowsills while the water pours down outside! At least there’s plenty of rainwater to water them with now that I’ve remembered (better for them than using tap water). All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

Glad you remembered. I move most of my plants outside when it is warm enough.

@Fleura I dont have too much trouble. But many of mine I have in hanging baskets which helps. The biggest problem I have is ants. I just spray them.

Definitely not warm enough for that right now, although I do move a few outside in the summer. But how do you avoid bringing lots of worms, woodlice etc inside when you bring them back in?

We still need more rain, it rained a little but not enough. The lawn is green again, but I did not mow, it's very wet now because of the morning dew.

Yesterday I ventured out between showers to plant a last few spring bulbs. I was surprised to find that below the surface the earth was actually still dryish and not waterlogged at all, in spite of all the rain we've had.

@Fleura - I pulled out some weeds in the vegetable garden and the roots were well wet. I think it's the humidity of the night more than the rain.

I can just see those indoor plants with their tongues hanging out watching all the rain coming down. At one stage, the water quality in my Mum's town wasn't very good (a bit too salty for ferns) and she was using rainwater for the ferns. Back then, everyone had big rainwater tanks, catching all the water off the rooves.

Yes I know, the poor things, gazing thirstily through the windows Rainwater is supposed to be best for potted plants, so in the summer I'm busy saving all the used tap-water from washing vegetables and such and carrying it outside to water the beds, then filling my indoor watering can with rainwater to bring back in!

@JudyEv Tell us more about the rainwater system (another idea for a post - as if you needed ideas!) But did you use the water for drinking? Did you have to filter it or treat it before use?

@Fleura On our 18 acres, the whole house was on rainwater. When we came here and I had to shower with town water, I never really felt clean for a while. But rainwater here would be polluted somewhat and there is nowhere we can put a tank.

I use rainwater, too, and now that you've reminded me, I should go out and refill my watering cans.
