Repurposing reusable grocery bags

In May a law banning plastic bags in grocery stores, restaurants, etc went into effect. In theory I applaud the change. In practicality--I hate it. I order my groceries from the local grocery store via Instacart. When the groceries are delivered, they are in brand new reusable bags that they charge like 30 cents for. I get new bags every single time. I literally have over 100 of them in the closet. People realized pretty quickly that they hadn't thought through the legislation very well. Many people are in the same boat as me with all of these bags that we don't need or want. Soooooo I'm using them as gift bags for Christmas presents. This way I am getting rid of several *and* I don't have to buy gift bags. It is so ghetto but I don't care.

The stores here are back to paper bags and in this raining state, having reusable are a must now or you pay 10 cents for a bag that rips and soggy by the time you get to your vehicle.

"It is so ghetto" --- a new expression for me. Is it widely known or have you just coined it?

It is kind of common. . . at least around here.

It's a common expression around here. It implies that something is "trashy" or "low class".

People in the UK did not like the sales tax on plastic bags and just carried shopping home in their hands

Oh no, those bags very wanted, so you're doing very good, indeed. Helping with a bag for groceries, a gift too, so repurposing is recycling, I ghetto at all. I buy bags all over $1 now!!

We do use way, way too much plastic. I agree it's convenient. I have adapted over the years, I carry the little chico bags in my purse, they unfold and hold a lot of things. Some of mine are 9 or 10 years old, still going strong. They have been washed over and over. I keep my insulated grocery bag in the car for Aldi or Costco runs, and a few cloth bags inside of it if I need them. I do take my plastic bags to the recycle bin at Target or Meijer, when I get them. Walmart in certain areas are charging for their bags now. I don't go to Walmart, but it has made some people really mad.

I use my plastic bags as trash can liners. I have a small five-gallon container (cat litter/bird seed type thing) for a “garbage can” and the Wally World bags line it. I haven’t bought “garbage bags” in three years!

I think that those people who made the decision about those "bags" are not. It was not thought through at all. They created a bigger mess.

New York banned plastic bags years ago. It is so nice to not see them blowing through the air, hanging from trees and bushes, etc. Even residents who miss the plastic bags love to not see that litter, but there can be drawbacks. I once picked up $169.00 worth of groceries at Tops Friendly Markets, and to my surprise, the cashier asked if I wanted bags. I looked at her and said, "no, just send me home with your best juggler." She stood confused while my friend, the customer standing behind me, and the customer at the other register beside her laughed. I have never liked plastic bags and have always opted for paper or my reusable totes, and hate that stores like Tops Friendly Markets charge $.05 for each paper bag, but it's better than either alternative. I don't drive, so it isn't like I can keep everything in the cart, then transfer them to bags or boxes in my trunk in the parking lot (yes, people do that). But, it gets better and easier not dealing with plastic bags.

@NJChicaa We did this quite a long time ago. I have bags that I got before the law went into effect. I take it they do not ask whether you want the bags or not. That is nice that you have gift bags for your holiday.

Greenwashing is frustrating. It sounds like they just created a different kind of garbage instead of solving the problem. It's too bad they don't offer a bag return/refund!

We always reuse the plastic bags; but there is way too much plastic pollution in the world. Having 100 bags that you can't use is so wasteful! They definitely didn't think this through.
