Some Weird Beginnings

I listened to the fireworks welcoming 2023, at the same time chatting to old classmates via Facebook. Then suddenly I got two alerts from Facebook: - my newly found cousin who wanted to 'Happy New Year' me. She then promptly asked me & my siblings to chip in, to give her US$ 130K so that she could set up a new grocery store. I took time explained to her that her request would not be met. She was very upset with me right now. - a stranger who introduced herself as an old classmate from my grade 4 class. I was curious, so I went along for several hours - to see if she was genuine or not. She might be genuine now that I think of it, but odd that I couldn't remember her face that well. (I was chosen to do paperwork for all the classess I belonged to due to my neat handwriting and my mature working attitude, so with time, I automatically memorised most of my clasmates' names & faces.) ---- Do you think I wasted my precious time chatting to a stranger like that? (My neck got a bit tired after those few hours chatting to her via Facebook - I am not so sure if those hours were productive or not!). Would you ask your cousin whom you just talked to for a few days, US$130K to help you out with a business venture? (I won't be upset one bit if that young cousin of mine stop chatting to me. I do live a busy life after all .) --- Do you like my daughter's cat? This photo was taken perhaps a year or so ago.

Boo on the cousin - I would never have nerve to ask for money like that . I wouldn't even do that to a cousin I know well! Like you, I tend to remember names and faces of former classmates. If I really could not remember, I guess there are other classmates I could ask to see if this person was genuine or not. We have old class photos and yearbooks we could also check on as proof.

We didn't do that at my time, ages ago. Or we could have traced back certain name easily. A pity.

@YrNemo Does anyone else recall this person? I reconnected with a friend who didn't even recall much about his old school days - even in seeing old photos. He said he moved around so much in his childhood that it was all a blur.

@much2say This is the thing: if the classmate happened to be too average, he/she is not likely to leave any impression. I think this person was in that category: not rich or poor enough, not intelligent or dumb enough, not too well behaved or too naughty, etc... (I remember all the strong cases hahaha.) I vaguely remember this name now after thinking lots about it. I remember thinking this - one day many years ago. 'This person's name blah blah blah is very similar to my enemy's name, with a slightly different spelling.' To be exact, she was in the class nextdoor to my old one. Her lady teacher often flirted to my single handsome male teacher. (I was asked to do the name list for that class a few times,)

Got a lovely cat. Helping a family member is too crucial whether to extend help or not. Family members won't ask help if they think you can't afford.

Since I don't even have 0.1% of that amount to give away, I have no choice but to grin and pretend like I didn't hear that request from that relative of mine.

@Nakitakona You are right 100% there, silence is golden in this case.

@YrNemo Sometimes it's better to keep silent than to say something which may be misunderstood by the concerned.

About that chat with your classmate it depends on how eager you are to increase your social contacts. You must have heard of this saying:" Neither a borrower, nor a lender be. For loan oft loses both itself and friend. And borrower dulls the edge of husbandry."

-I did want to find out if that lady would know about some other friends/classmates who we were still looking for. -re: the money requested. Last time I checked, I was not a bank or a lender... (I didn't promise either.)

If you enjoyed chatting it was not wasted time, no matter if that person is really the one she pretends to be or not. I stopped lending money.

@YrNemo - We have been scammed too, but we learnt our lesson quickly.

That was presumptuous of her. It sounds like she found you to take advantage of you. If you had nothing better to do at the time, it wasn't a time waster.

Your cousin was abusive asking you that. Your daughter's cat is cute.

We in the family, agreed with each other that that cat might have autism or with some mental disorder . (He is very slow in his reaction re: everything, except for catching a mouse or anything that moves.) I think so, re: that young cousin of mine asking me for a giant amount of money. Since she didn't get it, she promptly ignored me for a week or more, than just tentatively said hello to me again yesterday.

@YrNemo cats are very particular. Just ignore that cousin, she doesn't deserve your attention.

I would never ask anyone to help me start a business and I would stop talking to anyone asking me for financial help.

I never loan money anymore especially to family. And less likely to for one I just met.

Since I don't have any, she can't use any tactic to convince or persuade me .
