My Dog Sitting Days are Over

Remember how I was walking the neighbor's two dogs while he was in the hospital? Well, his wife brought him home this afternoon so they no longer require my dog-walking services. Although I am happy he is out of the hospital and got to come home, I am rather sad because I have grown to love those 2 sweet dogs and will miss them. I am also sad that I will have to get more motivated to get more steps in on my own. I have a dog myself and walk her twice a day, but we also have a fenced-in yard so she can just go relieve herself there. The walking is really for me, and it keeps her senses busy as she sniffs lots of things on our walks. I usually struggle to hit 8,000 steps per day, even with walking our dog. In the past week, my step count has vastly improved because I was walking the neighbor's dogs at least twice a day: Here are my step counts for the past week: Wednesday: 9070 Thursday: 8274 Friday: 11,267 (I also went grocery shopping!) Saturday: 9,599 Not bad huh? Do you do anything special to get more steps in your day?

I usually get ten thousand steps regardless of what we are doing lol. But I broke the strap on my fit bit and haven't replaced it yet.

@thislittlepennyearns How do you get that many in? Are you a jogger? Work on a farm? Walk to work? I am really curious because even getting to 8,000 some days is a real struggle for me!

Those are really good figures. We haven't reached anything like that even with walking the dog.

@Kouponkaren We don't do many steps at all unless we're house-sitting somewhere.

@JudyEv Well walking a lot is not that important to everyone. Do you do other things for physical exercise?

@JudyEv I think I need to do laps inside the house more, but it's SO boring. I used to dance sometimes to get more steps in. Maybe I will try that again.

You will have to walk your own dog more.

@jstory07 I guess you are right. I hadn't thought of that but she will love it!

I just walk circles in the house right now to get my steps. But it is easier now with Miss Eye Patch making me get up more

@Kouponkaren I go from family room to kitchen to front room and circle back. I almost always go over ten thousand

@wolfgirl569 I do that as well. Not circles or I would get dizzy.LOL, but I have a route I walk from the kitchen, into the dining room, and back. I only do it if I haven't reached my step goal for the day, which is 8,000 - 9,000 steps. What is your step goal?

@wolfgirl569 How long does it take you to get to 10,000 that way? Or do you break it up into different sessions?

I suppose you do get attached to the pets you are temporarily looking after. I sometimes keep an eye on next door's moggie. He is a handsome, disdainful, chap, but I like him!

@Kouponkaren Once he settled in, you weren't going anywhere!

@Ronrybs Yes, I miss those 2 sweet dogs. They were always so happy to see me coming. Once I sat down with them and one crawled in my lap. He weighs about 80 pounds but fortunately, I was sitting on the floor so the floor held some f his weight.

I don’t count my steps. I walk about an hour every day at a good pace. How many steps do you think that would be?

Hm, it depends on how fast you walk but for me, I walk 100 steps per minute so walking for one hour straight would be 6,000 steps. Of course, then you are just walking around doing your reglet routine the rest of the time which s probably good for another 3,000 steps minimum...I would guess. 3.000 steps per day is what the average person walks, according to the book that came with my pedometer.

@Kouponkaren I bought a pedometer but I couldn’t get it to work. I wanted to get to at least 1000 steps per day and more if I could.

@RubyHawk Did you mean 1,000 or 10,000? You are well past 1,000 if you walk at least an hour every day. My pedometer is an Omron and I love it. I have had the same one for about 5 years.

That is good. Can't do this anymore because of health reasons, unfortunately.

I only walk through my apartment during the day to check on my cats when they are too quiet or I do not see them for a long time,

@Kouponkaren not many I have to consider starting with a walk at least once a week and then adding to it,

@RasmaSandra I don't think that wracks up a lot of steps throughout the day, does it?

I'm glad you got all those steps in. Your dog must like you being home more often now.

@sallypup Yes, she was very jealous that I spent time with those other dogs and my husband said she ran back and forth to each doot and watched us walk by and barked and whined. Poor girl. It must have been traumatic for her but I am all hers now.

@JB_Girl Good thinking, but most of the people around here walk their own dogs. I could put out the word that I am available if anyone needs someone.

That's wonderful you're working at getting your steps. I just put a pedometer app on my phone. It started out at 6000 steps. I'm now at 7000. My apartment building has nice long hallways I can walk several times a day, and a stationary bike in the community room. It really helps. I've had the app for one week. I just upped the goal to 7000 per day yesterday. I plan to work up to 10K steps.

@just4him That's a good plan. They say 10,000 steps per day will keep you healthy. I am trying for 8,000 - 9,000 steps every day before I work toward 9,000 - 10,000.

Maybe there are other neighbors who need help with their pets. Do you have like a community board or maybe even check Facebook?
