One thing my mother left me was a big bag of soft mohair-type knitting wool in lovely shades of red. She obviously saw the bag-full on sale somewhere – I guess it was probably an end of range or the like, but there were no labels on the balls – and thought I would like it because she knew I had knitted two things from similar yarn in the past.
As it happened I didn’t need to use it for myself, as I already had the warm jumpers and cardigan I had knitted before, so I still had it in my stash when Big One needed a warm jumper a few years ago. So I found a pattern that used yarn that looked like the same sort, and knitted one for her.
It worked out well; she was very happy with it and has worn it a lot for several years.
Now it’s getting a bit small, so since I still had more than half the yarn left I offered to make her another. It was meant to be in time for Christmas but I didn’t quite manage it, but finally it is finished and she’s pleased to have one that’s a better fit just in time for this latest cold weather.
The smaller one is still in decent shape and just needs a wash and brush-up to be usable by Little One if she wants it – although Big One is loathe to give it up just yet!
There’s still one ball left as well, maybe I could make some matching mittens or something.
I know my mother would have been pleased it turned out to be so useful, so thanks Mam, that was a great bargain!
The picture doesn’t show them at their best – there wasn’t enough space to spread them both out properly!

Good for you. I'm sure they're lovely and warm. My SIL passed away a little over a year ago and she was a great knitter. Her husband gave me a half-finished grey sweater and asked could I make a beanie from the wool as he loved how soft it was. There was no extra wool so the sweater couldn't be finished but I've been pulling it undone as I crochet a beanie. It was a shame to undo such lovely work but at least it will have a new life and stay in the family.

The jumpers have been knitted well. I found knitting difficult when I was younger.

I love fuzzy sweaters but they always end up generating balls...
