There's Fungus on that Tree

We have a dead tree in the back yard. It appears to have been struck by lightning sometime in the past. Today, I noticed several large growths of fungus showing on the outside. This means the decomposers are doing their jobs. I imagine it won't be too long before the tree will be a pushover. The good news is that when it does fall, it won't hit anything other than the ground. Do you enjoy finding interesting things like this around the yard or on walks in the woods?

I love the beginning of the original Planet Earth series' "Jungles" episode. It shows a mature tree falling which offers sunlight for seedlings that were in the shade.

This tree will allow some sunlight through. Mostly, it will return a lot of nutrients to the soil.

@NJChicaa Between the fungus, the termites, the beetles, and the carpenter ants, it'll be more like 5 to 7 years.

That's a pretty cool picture! We have a ton of mushrooms growing in the backyard. I think its because of how wet the yard stays, because well Florida.

@thislittlepennyearns It hasn't been all that wet this year, which is one reason the proliferation of mushrooms has surprised me. The great, underground, mother fungus must have discovered a subterranean water source that is giving it lots of growing power. One doesn't have to dig too deep around here to hit water.

@DWDavis That's a good picture too! Has it been extra wet or rainy there this year?

@DWDavis When it rains our yard generally holds the water.

We had several like that this fall. I thought it odd as they never used to show up here in such vivid colors.

I'm wondering how far gone the interior of the tree is.

I don't think so. I'm not an expert on mushrooms and only eat the kind that they sell at the market.

That is certainly a good crop of fungi. There are so many different fungi and all sorts of colours.

I've identified at least two different types of fungi on this tree. I find fungi much more interesting than plants.

@DWDavis I don't really know much about them but I often take a photo if I find a new one.

It will become soil for new trees to grow in and the cycle will continue.

I do enjoy walking in the woods, I read that trees give off feel good chemicals and I believe it. I always feel better after a walk in the woods.
