a bargain on pork

I didn't expect to find any discounted meat today when I went to Smart & Final for cheap milk, but I found yellow clearance stickers on some huge packs of pork cushion (which is similar to pork butt, but leaner as it comes from a different part of the leg). With the discount, it came to around $1.49/lb for boneless pork! This won't be for tonight's dinner (which is chicken soup and leftovers), but we'll eat some of this tomorrow for sure and the rest will be frozen. Part of it is currently in the oven, rubbed with the last of my Hawaiian red salt and liquid smoke seasoning, where it will roast on low for several hours to be something similar to kalua pork. Tomorrow I'll serve it with the last of the cabbage and maybe I'll make some macaroni salad, and I can use the cooked meat in other meals this week... things like bbq pulled pork with macaroni and cheese, Mexican-style haystacks, fried rice, pork stew/soup, or pan fried as a breakfast hash with greens and potatoes.

You paid an excellent price for that meat! That is flavorful and very lean! Congrats on that find!

@spiderdust I would have spend everything I had on me to buy as much of those as I could afford. We might have nothing else to eat for a week, but one of those packages would last much longer in meals than a week.

@DaddyEvil I only had $30 in my pocket, so technically I spent everything I had on me that would buy a package. Plus I got milk too!

They had three other packages with the clearance stickers, but I only grabbed one. I audibly gasped when I found it!

I saw a recipe for pulled pork nachos. So I want to get some pork next time I see it on sale and do that.

I think I may have made some before... bbq sauce, grated cheddar cheese or cheese sauce, chopped green onion or slivers of red onion, maybe some slices of jalapeno...

Yeah, I wasn't very familiar with it either. I looked it up on my phone while standing next to the meat case.

I am glad you got such a great deal on pork. It is versatile. I'm thinking of making some more pork barbeque over the weekend.

That's a great bargain! I would have probably bought more than one if I could manage it, cut it up and freeze it. Meat bargains are often hard to find!

I only had $30 in my pocket, so that was all I could manage today. I did get the biggest one at least!

Between this and the turkeys, we'll be good on proteins for a while. I also still have some hot dogs and smoked sausages in the freezer, plus things like Spam and canned tuna on the shelf. Everyone will eat beans except 2 people (and their dad is working with them on that), so I can make a pot of beans sometime soon too.

I suspect that I wouldn't find such good prices at the other Smart & Final stores in town, this one seems to discount items quite frequently.

Last night I wasn't home, so they made haystacks (I've posted about haystacks before, they're a similar concept to burrito bowls) with the pork. Tonight we're having fried cabbage and kalua pork and rice (having the rice instead of macaroni salad since the one who really likes macaroni salad won't be home).
