Taxes! Does anyone understand them?

Well here we are at the end of January and as usual I’m filling in my tax return at the last minute. Like most people, I suspect, I really hate doing it, so I end up procrastinating and putting it off endlessly. The worst part is having to chase up all the necessary documents, whether they are actual paper documents or electronic files saved on the computer. The amount of time spent to find out that you earned 15p interest on your savings for example, is just maddening. Now at last I have actually done it – submitted the tax return and paid the bill – yay! But I’m more confused than ever. The online account summary page showed that I had overpaid and was a few hundred pounds in credit, and yet my tax calculation showed that I owed a few thousand pounds, which I duly paid. And then when I looked at the list of previous payments, not all the ones I have made showed up! I have no idea what’s going on. Normally I just pay what I'm told and hope they have got it right. I guess I should try and call HMRC (next month once the rush is over) and hope they can explain it all to me. The problem of course is that once I’ve submitted my return all I want to do is forget about the whole thing! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Congratulations!! I’m clueless. Hubs takes care of taxes. Still waiting for more forms.

No, I don’t understand taxes. I just accept that whatever the software does with the figures I put in is correct. And, given that the Internal Revenue Service doesn’t knock on my door, I guess the IRS accepts whatever the software does, too.

@fleura As a technophobe I do it the old fashioned way - posting off a form. But wouldn’t you just love to have to pay £4.8 million in tax!!

Or to accidentally 'forget' to mention a few million here or there...

The tax department in India too at times deducts extra amount and takes time to adjust the overpaid taxes.

That's what I'm wondering about. I'm trusting them to work it out correctly but who knows?

@Fleura You have to keep reminding them. That's what happens in India.

Our taxes are withheld from our monthly salary and the office submit the alpha list.

That used to happen, but now I'm self-employed I have to do it myself.

No but if I needed to, I would file a tax return by consulting an accountant.

That would certainly be easier, but since I don't earn all that much I always worry that the accountant's fees would be a substantial portion of my income!

I understand them to the extent they pertain to my income and tax return. We file in July. So I am good. However, we pay advance tax every quarter. I have to pay in March, before March 15th actually. I know I have to pay almost 40000 INR, so I am pretty cool. Next year, I will save more so that I don't pay as much tax.

It's a lot of math. I hate math. I use Turbo Tax and just fill-in-the-blanks.

I can do my state tax, but doing the federal makes me nervous.

My mother told me that tax in Australia was brought in when WWI started (I think it was WWI) and they said it would be abolished once the war was over. Well, that didn't happen, did it?

Mike always takes care of our taxes. It's been easier since he retired. He doesn't pay on what he draws with his social security. Since I am self-employed we always owe something, but I'm not working as much so that has gone down.

We do our own taxes each year. Have to keep up with all the changes.
