A book named "Chilton's Auto Repair Manual 1954-1963" was checked out of the Abilene Library in Texas by the Abilene Water Department in 1979 when a person returned the book back to the library Tuesday.
The mystery is what was the reason that the book was not returned to the library 44 years later since library officials decided to keep quiet about the details of the missing book which would have had the person who returned the book 44 years later a fine of $1,606 dollars.
But since the late fee at the Abilene library have been waived so the penalty of returning the book 44 years later there will be no penalty.

I also like these overdue book stories since it is better for the book to be returned later than never.

@celticeagle That is what I am wondering how did the book stay out of a library after 44 years.

That's very amusing, wonder if the book pages are still intact.

I agree with you that a book that was checked out in 1979 looks to be in good condition.

44 years is likely close to a world record even though there are many other stories that make the news cycle of books being returned to libraries after many years away from home.

Usually the person who checked out the book either moved to another city, passed away or forgot about it.

It is one saying I like to use a lot since it is indeed better than late than ever in events like this.

That is true since 44 years is a very long time for a book to be overdue.
